Mothercare stock an excellent vareity of matresses. So many different sizes and interiors! You have such a choice. You are more than likely to find the exact size of matress that you require, even if the cot you bought was not from mothercare. Once you have selected your size, you have the choice of foam interior or a sprung interior (please note that the prices jump around ALOT depending on the interior you select!) and then you have the choice of a 'coolmax' covering - the latest technology in matress as I can understand! Basically, what I understand 'coolmax' to be is that it's breathable and is a porous fabric. This means that if the baby wets the bed, the wet is absorbed into the matress and the baby is kept clean and dry. As you can imagine, you pay the price for such a fabric! Still, it certainly seems a good idea. Unfortunatly, mothercare no longer offer a custom made service as they did a few years ago, but the store I visited were very helpful and recommended a company where I could get a rounded end matress which I need for an old style moses basket.

We have had this cot mattress (continental size) for 3 years, it was bought new for our oldest daughter and is now in use with our second. Although guidelines suggest that a new mattress should be bought for each new child, we felt that as this has a removeable washable cover, and our children have not been prone to sickness or any other nasties, there was no need to replace it. Also it was quite expensive so that is a factor for us. We have had the mattress cover off a few times for washing – the top unzips and you just need to wash that part. If it comes off in the morning it is usually dry for that night in the summer, if it’s winter, I put it on a radiator and keep the heating on to make sure it dries. It is easy to get stains out of and still looks like new. If the zip off cover isn’t dry, you can always use the mattress the other way up for a night. I am more than happy with this mattress. I do know of others who report that the foam version sometimes develops a “dent” where baby lies which never goes away (though this hasn’t happened to us). But if this is a concern I understand that there is a sprung version available too.
