Powell & Craft Patchwork Quilt
Advantages: a beautiful product, very high quality
Disadvantages: difficult to get hold off
I have two young boys, the eldest has just turned three and my youngest is 17 months and in their small life time they have received many presents for friends and family. We have been grateful for all the presents they have received but there has been some that have stood in my memory better than others. Of course the handmade stuff always stands out as you appreciate the time and effort that has gone into it but also there are some gifts you can buy that are beautiful and the quality is as good as handmade items. One of those items has to be the Powell & craft quilt my son's received. Their auntie bought both of them an identical patchwork quilt made by Powell & craft.
This quilt is described as a luxury blue baby patchwork quilt and is made from 100% cotton. And luxury is the right word to describe this item. The quilt measures about 100cms by 70cms so is an average size to fit a cot. Going from the outside in of the design we start with a thick plain baby blue border about 6cms in width, then a white border with blue leaves about 3cms in width then there are the six stitched in squares in twos.
The squares are quite large and they measure about 23cms by 23cms. Each contains a simple picture that is made up of blue and white gingham, polka dot and floral design. They look cleverly put together and are very child like to fit a lovely baby boys nursery. My son's particular quilt has the following six pictures on it started in the top left hand corner is a seahorse, move across to a what looks like a shed, moving to the centre left hand square is a house filling the whole square moving along is a gorgeous patchwork teddy where they have made full use of the patchwork. Bottom left on ours is a train but after recently looking online for this item it seems they have changed this square to a cat it is the only bit they have changed since we received ours. And last at bottom right is a boat. I love all the squares they are very typical baby boy pictures.
The back of the quilt is very simple in contrast to the beautifully crafted front. It is a very simple blue and white floral pattern with a little hint of pale yellow for the flower heads. I love the simplicity of this side.
The quilt is put together with very neat stitching that is hard to see a less under very close inspection. The quilt is very nearly made up of blue and white, there is an ever so small amount of yellow in the floral pattern and a small patch of red gingham on the seahorse. This quilt is very much patchwork and to touch has that slightly uneven feel. That aside it is a very soft padded quilt that isn't too heavy for a small child to have on them. It does come with a reminder that a quilt is nor suitable for a child under one. I absolutely love the way each picture has been stitched together with different pieces of material.
I have always tried to keep these as top quilts so they don't get as much wear as other blankets just because they seem too nice to use. I have washed them though on several occasions on a light watch and they have been perfectly fine. With small children you do need this as from time to time they do get ill and it will need to be washed.
After much looking around I have found Powell and craft do, do a variety of nursery quilts for boys and girls. And as you would expect the girls quilt is made up of patchwork material in pink and white. There are some other wonderful designs for young children. I have found this quite difficult to find but I did find it on a couple of baby gift websites. And it seems to be priced for around the thirty five pounds. I would say this well worth the money for a gorgeous gift any mum or dad would be happy to receive for their little one.
As an added touch my sister also got my son's name and date of birth stitched onto the quilt. It is very cleverly put at the bottom in the blue border so it doesn't stand out too much. I love this thoughtful extra as these quilts are something I will always keep for them.
Summary: ideal as present
