Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier
Advantages: Comfortable, adjusts for you and partner, easy to put on and take off
Disadvantages: A little warm in hot weather
On my must have list when I was expecting was a baby carrier. After much research and trying on of various carriers we decided to get the Baby Bjorn Active. For us it was ideal as it was about the only carrier we could adjust to fit both my husband and myself as I am a slight 5 4 and he is a burly 6 4.
Why get a baby carrier?
The most important thing about a baby carrier is that it let's you be hands free. This is very handy for getting I to some shops where a pram would be too bulky and is ideal if flying where you really do need both hands free if travelling with just baby and no helpful partner. We have also found it good for walks where again a pram would struggle with the terrain.
The only downside with a carrier is that you cannot see your feet so make sure that there is nothing you can easily trip over lying around.
Once you have made the decision to get a carrier I think the next thing to look for is comfort as you will hopefully be using for sometime and your little bundle of joy is only going to get heavier.
What is the Baby Bjorn?
There are many different types of carrier. Some a sling based but we wanted something more substantial. The Baby Bjorn is a baby carrier that comes in two pieces which you attach together to provide a safe harness for your baby. The back piece is a harness which you put on in the same way as putting a jacket on. The padded front part is then attached to it and you can then put the baby into it and secure the clips.
How easy is it to use?
Naturally safety is of prime concern so I would recommend you get used to putting the carrier on and off a few times before trying it with baby. The design is very good and makes good use of labelling and colour coding so it is easy to see what should go where. The straps are easy to adjust so both you and your partner can use the carrier. The shoulder straps are nice and wide which makes carrying the baby comfortable. When the baby is newborn you need to place them facing towards you with the head support up. If the baby is small there are also leg supports you can use. I was a little nervous about putting my newborn son in but once he was a little older found this to be a good way of carrying him. Once your baby can support their head you can place them facing outwards with the head rest folded down. My teething son likes a good chew on it!
Why Baby Bjorn?
It can be worn by both those of a small and large build so although not cheaper you don't have to buy separate carriers for you and your partner.
It is very comfortable and therefore you can wear it for long periods without it hurting. This is handy when walking in the country or in a park.
It is easy to put on and take off. This is very practical when your baby has fallen asleep in it and you don't want to disturb them.
It can be used for newborn and older babies. The minimum weight is 8 lbs or 3.5 kg and maximum is 26 lbs or 12 kg. The head support provides good support for young babies and the leg adjustment means they sit comfortably.
Both my husband and I have found it to be really comfortable to use and our son loves being carried around in it especially now he can look around as he faces outwards. So far we haven't had any accidents so haven't had to wash it but if the worst should happen then it can be washed at 40c which is reassuring.
It is available at many retailers including Mothercare and Boots. It costs around £69 but do shop around for deals. I got mine in a Boots baby promotion three for the price of two deal.
I can certainly recommend this carrier for all of the above reasons. I am hard pressed to think of any disadvantages although I would suggest you put it on underneath your coat so it is more comfortable and you can wrap your coat around your baby if there is bad weather. In hot weather it can feel a bit warm but these are fairly minor issues and for pure comfort alone I would suggest you buy this. A well deserved 5 stars from me.
Summary: Great design makes it so comfortable for you and for your baby
