Baby Bjorn Front Carrier
Advantages: Carry baby around while getting other things done
Disadvantages: Can get uncomfortable after a while
Sometimes a pram or pushchair isn't convenient, yet you can't carry your baby as you need your hands free. That's where a baby carrier or sling comes in handy.
I realised the need for such a carrier when my daughter was about 1 month old.
After doing some research online and in magazines, I opted for the Babybjörn Baby Carrier. It was the right price, did what I needed it to do, and could be used with baby facing front or rear.
I bought it for around £44.99 at my local Mothercare store, but they are currently £49.99 at Mothercare, although I'm sure you could find it cheaper if you shop around, or check ebay.
Baby faces inwards until they are strong enough to hold their neck up by themselves, usually around 3 months. From then baby can face forward. It's suitable up to 10kg. My daughter outgrew hers at around 8 months.
It's fairly easy to put the carrier on and get the baby loaded by yourself, although my husband did struggle a bit and I usually had to help him!
Simply put each arm through the straps, click the fastening together at the front, pick up your baby and put him/her against your chest and bring the main carrier part up towards your baby, click into place on one side, then the other. If baby is facing inwards there are two more fastenings to support the head. If facing outwards, the front flap folds down and then you attach the two fastenings so baby can see outwards.
The carrier has lumbar support and is specially designed to distribute the weight of your baby across your body so it's more comfortable. After a while wearing this, and as baby got bigger I found it hurt my shoulders more than my back, so wasn't comfortable to wear for any length of time.
I'm glad I bought a carrier. At first I used it around the house, my daughter wouldn't be left on her own & I needed to get jobs done, so I just strapped her into the carrier and went about my chores. It was a great help when we went on holiday to Disney World. She didn't want to be strapped into her pushchair all day so my husband and me took it in turns to have her in the carrier, and she loved being up high, being able to see what was going on.
Although not cheap, it's a good quality carrier that can be a big help.
Summary: Easy to use
