Advantages: Comfortable for all sizes of people and good from newborn upwards.
Disadvantages: Takes a few goes before you feel confident putting it on quickly.
WHAT IS IT?
The baby bjorn is a fabric baby carrier/sling which enables you to carry your baby close to your body from new born. It consists of the main body and straps which can be adjusted to fit the size of the baby and the size of the carrier.
WHEN IS IT USEFUL?
It is a good alternative to a pram or buggy when you are out and about. We used it a lot when our son was tiny as he would sleep really well in the sling and it was much easier to go in and out of shops with him in the sling. It was especially good for super markets when he was too small to fit in the trolley seats. It was also my life saver in the first few weeks when I was trying to do housework as my son didn't like to be put down, so I could do house work with him in the sling. We also used to take it away with us when staying with relatives instead of filling up the car with the pushchair.
WHAT AGE IS IT SUITABLE FOR?
We used this from about 2 weeks until 4 months regularly, but after that our son was too heavy for me to use it apart from on short journeys. My husband still carries my son in it now at 7 and a half months.
It is lightweight, washes well and can be adapted to suit various heights/weights of babies and various heights of adults (I am 5ft5 and my husband is 6ft2 and we can both wear it comfortably). It has thick straps to spread the weight evenly. The baby can also face two ways. From new born until about 4 months they face in towards you which is great for soothing them. After that they can face outwards which is good for nosy babies when they are more alert.
It is tricky to put on, this takes a lot of practice (a lot!). I used to take the sling out with me and use it to put my baby in when he started crying in the pram as this would calm him down, however a screaming baby and a complicated sling resulted in near melt down for me quite a few times until I had mastered the technique. It is also expensive to buy.
Whilst this sling was great for us for the first few months, we got given it and I don't think I would have paid full price for the amount of time we used it and for the amount of time it took me to master wearing it. It was useful, especially as another trick to use to calm a crying baby, but unless you use it daily so get used to your baby's weight, after a few months they are too heavy to carry in the sling for any length of time.
Summary: A useful product but for the amount of time you use it, it is quite expensive.
