Kari-Me: The one essential 'baby essential'
Member Name: Mrs_Frank
Advantages: Comfortable, practical and surprisingly simple
Disadvantages: If you let your man carry the baby in it, you'll have to fend off many admiring women!!
As a first-time mum, I found the array of different baby related equipment somewhat overwhelming, and the range of baby-carriers was no different. Like other first-timers I struggled to predict which items were going to be genuinely useful and which would become storage problems.
The Kari-Me sling is essentially a long piece of slightly stretchy fabric which tapers at each end. It is over 90% cotton and is available in lots of colours. The fabric can be wrapped around the parent/carer and tied securely in a simple knot in a number of different ways to provide different ways of holding your baby 'hands-free'.
The sling had already been recommended to me by a number of friends. I must admit, I thought it looked a bit 'earth mothery' and wondered how safe or easy it would actually be to use.
My husband and I were lucky enough to have the opportunity to try out several baby carriers before our little girl was born. This one was by far the comfiest and so we decided to buy one. We looked around for some time for the cheapest one we could find, but soon discovered that they were selling for around £30 on eBay; not much cheaper than the £37.95 the official site was selling them for. We decided to spend the money and get a new one, thinking that it would retain it's value if we didn't get on with it and needed to sell it on.
Our daughter is now 16 weeks old and my husband and I agree that this is the single most valuable piece of baby kit we bought. We used it the most during the first few weeks of her life, when she liked to be close to us all the time. Sometimes being carried around in the sling was it the only way she could get off to sleep.
Some people have said that the sling looks complicated to do up, but we were surprised how easy it has been to learn how to put it on, and we look forward to trying out some of the other ways of wearing it as our baby gets older, after all, the Kari-Me website says these slings can be used up to 3 years old or 33lbs.
It is so portable that we take it wherever we went as 'back up' in case she gets grizzly trying to get off to sleep. Inevitably being popped in the carrier soothes her. Once the pram got a puncture and so I used the sling to comfortably walk 15 minutes into town with her strapped to me. It's also great for shopping in smaller shops or those with steps when you just can't face wheeling your pram around and feeling like you're getting in everyone's way and knocking carefully arranged displays over!
Basically, this piece of fabric may seem highly over-priced, but it's probably the best piece of fabric you'll ever buy!
Summary: A fabulous, versatile, comfortable baby carrier that's not as complicated as it looks
