Kelty Adventure Child Carrier
Advantages: Great quality, super cool features.
Disadvantages: Will not adjust down for a fairly petite female.
Being an avid outdoorsy type family and more kids than you can shake a stick at, this Kelty Kids Adventurer seemed like a good buy. We purchased it about two years ago from Tisos in Glasgow at about £170. However, the availability of these seems somewhat erratic, quite hard to track down on the net and I since havent noticed any in the shops.
We chose the Kelty Kids Adventurer over other other makes and models of child carrier because of the multitude of features it has, and of the exceptional quality of the production. The lightweight frame is covered in an extremely hardwearing ripstop type material. Once the frame is off the back the bottom pops out to form a stand, this is purely as an aid to loading the child into the carrier and the child should not be left like this for fear of tipping over. The design of the straps have been modified from previous models as to prevent them slipping over the childs shoulders and to prevent chafe. The leg straps are also adjustable and their operation instructions are clearly marked as a safely feature.
The carrier has a back compartment which can also be used as a detachable child size rucksack. it is in here that the rain shield is stowed. The 'pop up' style rain shield is operated by press studding the ends in at the back, and doing velcro fasteners to the front. It is fairly quick once you get the hang of it, there is a waterproof flap at the front which can be lifted if desired. The only drawback with this is that weather can come in from the sides, and in a previous model Kelty had roll down flaps here, but seem to have done away with them for this model.
There is a whole myriad of other cool features this carrier has which outranks it from the rest, these include: mobile phone pocket, removable rear view mirror, soother attachers, adjustable back length, rope handle, waist storage compartment, reflective taping the list just goes on. It is these features which make this carrier so cool, and the design is really dynamic and not at all 'coochy coo' which makes it ideal for men to carry.
As a family we have really used this carrier, the weight limit for the child is 40lbs, but I challenge anyone to carry a child of that weight for any length of time! It has lasted my first two children from about 6 months up until they are able to walk up in the hills themselves (about 3) and my youngest is still enjoying his daily rides in it at 20 months. My husband usually carries the child on our walks which have even been as long as full mountains in Scotland, and has found it very comfortable. I have used it myself but I find it does not adjust down far enough for a fairly petite female frame.
Overall this is a great quality carrier and I would highly recommend it for active families. It is very durable and is still looking like new after three children and numerous expeditions.
Summary: Great quality carrier packed with useful features.
