I used this carrier for a day on loan. While is is much better than the Mothercare carrier, I found it lacking when compared with the Baby Bjorn carrier, and as they are both the same price, I would not choose the Tomy one. It is quite comfortable and fairly secure, but I didn't feel that my son's head was properly secure and supported and it also swayed as I walked.... The straps are nicely padded and again comfortable, but they were a bit uncomfortable and I found I had to shift them slightly every once in a while to stop them from rubbing.... For those who give their babies dummies, there is a handy strap to attach one to, which I thought was a good idea... Overall, quite a good sling, but not the best to get.
Ive been using this carrier since Ethan was two weeks old, and we both love it, Ive only used it in the 'facing mum' position and am looking forward to trying it facing outwards when Ethan is old enough. The straps cross over on your back and are padded, which I find very comfatable. Its also easy to get Ethan in and out of it on my own. I would recommend this to everyone. It sure beats getting on the bus with a pushchair!
I bought my TOMY SAFARI baby carrier after trying it out at the Prima Baby show (August 2000). They were loaning out brand new carriers out I thought that I'd just try one for size, in the end, it was so good and comfortable that I bought it! (They were selling them for half price too, £15 & not £30!) Previously, I had struggled for months with a Mothercare Turnabout Carrier, which was awful. I had bought the Mothercare carrier because I was on a low budget at the time and I thought that all carriers are the same (big mistake!) I spent £15 on it and I got what I paid for, a very basic carrier that I found uncomfortable to use and my son kept nearly falling out of it because the Velcro straps kept coming undone. In hindsight, I would advise anyone when choosing a baby carrier to go for a well-padded one, well padded straps and well padded for the baby, don’t skimp on price, as you tend to get what you pay for. A cheap carrier will be nothing but trouble and as your baby grows, you may find it too uncomfortable to use. Anyway, on to the TOMY SAFARI carrier. DESIGN The TOMY SAFARI carrier is a brilliant, it’s a stylish carrier and it’s been really well designed. It’s very smart in black with the inside lining being a small leopard print. (You can’t see the leopard print when you are using it which I am glad about, because I’m not a big fan of animal prints!) CARRYING & ADJUSTMENT STRAPS AND THE PADDING The carrier itself is very light and is thoroughly padded all over to keep your baby comfortable. It also has extra padding at the leg holes and at the top of the carrier where the baby’s head is. Very importantly, the carrying straps are also very padded which makes it very comfortable to use. The waist strap also has a huge padded part which goes nicely in the centre of your back at the waist to stop the strap cutting into you. I can’t fault it as I managed to carry my son i
n it until he weighed 21lbs without any strain or cutting into me. It has a cross over strap at the back and a waist strap, which helps to keep your child in place securely. There are plenty of adjustable straps to get the carrier just right for your child. Once you’ve set the adjustments, it’s easy because the harness type clips open and shut very easily to get your child in and out. It’s very easy to use and isn’t fiddly. You can carry your baby either facing inwards as a small infant or outwards once your baby can support its neck well. It is a very secure carrier, holding the baby's head and body well. IT LASTS YOUR CHILD A WHOLE YEAR My son was five months old when I bought this carrier and we used it until he was 12 months old. Unlike most carriers which you can use until your baby is 9 months old, this carrier can last your child up to 12 months (or 21lbs). My son just having reached 13 months and 21lbs has only just outgrown it. It’s great value for money, strong and built to last! It’s still in absolutely excellent condition and will be used for my next child. (I can imagine that it would comfortably last good use by several children.) HANDY FEATURES It has a small pocket on the body of the carrier, which I found great to put my tube pass or bus tickets in whilst out and about. It also has a zip pocket on the waist strap which can act like a travel security belt. Another nice couple of features are the dribble bib (removable for washing) and the short strap to hold your child’s dummy to prevent it from being lost. WASHING This carrier has been through the wash several times on a delicates cycle, but it is still in excellent, new looking condition. It has washed really well without losing its colour or shape. Over all, this is a great carrier and having bought a cheaper carrier beforehand I would definitely say that it was worth paying a few extra poun
ds for something better. If you want to use it a lot, then you both need something comfortable that will last and this carrier will fit the bill! A baby carrier is very handy for taking your baby on and off public transport easily and for travelling when a pushchair would be too cumbersome. Anyway, this carrier comes highly recommended and is great value for money.
