This is a review of the Millie & Boris - Dreampod 2.5 Tog sleeping bag from Mamas and Papas. This bag was so good we bought it twice! Well, in different sizes as it also matched the nursery and when our daughter wasn't wearing it I draped it over the side of the cot as it looked so lovely.
Why sleeping bags?
I read up about the baby sleeping bags as I was concerned about using blankets on our baby. For the first couple of weeks, I used an extra layer of clothes and a really thin blanket but I was terrified that our daughter would throw the blanket over her face. I think it's natural to worry like this with your first baby. We soon decided to try the sleeping bag as we hoped it would improve her sleeping habits. She tended to sleep a lot during the day and hardly at all during the night and it was sending me crazy. The M&P website states that this sleeping bag is suitable from birth but some people prefer to wait a while before using one for safety reasons. I think they are well designed and would probably use it from day one on any future kiddies.
What are they?
The sleeping bag generally fits over the shoulders with poppers (although we have had different styles) and then zips around the side and bottom so you can nappy change without removing it completely if it is during the night. You can buy them in summer and winter togs to increase the warmth. This is the 2.5 winter tog version.
The M&P M&B one
This Mamas and Papas Millie and Boris one is a velour material, decorated with the M&B characters. It is cosy to touch and my daughter always comes out feeling toasty!
We liked the first 0-6month size so much we bought the next size up (6-18 months). Our daughter is tall so would not fit in the first one past around five months but we still feel it was good value for money.
We immediately noticed a difference in sleeping once we used the sleeping bag. I think this is because it kept her consistently warm and gave her a cosy and contained feeling, especially when we moved her out of the moses basket and into the larger cot.
The sleeping bag washes very well and we would swap to our other sleeping bag in between uses. The label recommends washing at 40 degrees but I have done it at 60.
We didn't notice any difference between the bags and her sleeping behaviour, they all acted around the same performance wise and prices do vary so it's best to shop around. We liked this particular one but tried other brands of sleeping bag for comparison's sake too, as you will always need at least two (one to wear and one for the wash) but this one is special in my mind as it matches our nursery interior.
Price and availability
The sleeping bag costs £34 normally but is currently on offer at £27.20.
Material and size
Composition: Main: 77% Cotton, 23% Polyester
Size: H: 73cm approx.
The M&B colour scheme suits both boys and girls as it is fairly neutral so it is a safe buy if you are having a surprise. I think this is a great item and keeps the baby cosy without overheating. We found one layer of clothing (a sleepsuit) underneath the bag to be an ideal amount. If you are considering trying one of these with your baby I'd say definitely go for it!
