Heinz Farley's Rusks Original
by sarahrichmond5
When I started to wean my daughter a couple of weeks ago the first thing I thought of for her to try was rusks.
I had used these with my other two children and they had always been a big hit! I picked some up from the supermarket when I was doing my weekly shop. You can also get them in Boots or Superdrug too.
...
The rusks come in a square box and inside is two packs of rusks wrapped in silver paper. The rusks inside are round in shape.
When I used them I broke them into two at first as she didn't eat much then. 2 weeks on and she easily eats one with no problem at all. The information on the pack says that the rusks are packed with vitamins and iron. They are great for babies as they don't contain any salt, flavorings or colors.
I think the great thing about rusks is that you can mix them with milk or water and feed them with a spoon or you can let your baby hold them and feed themselves which my daughter really seems to love doing.
The rusks seem safe to give to your baby to hold as they melt in their mouth so no bits can break off and risk choking them. The rusks last for ages in my daughters hand so is good when I want to keep her occupied. I usually give her half of one as they are easier to hold and still last a long time.
The other great thing that I have found is that you can just pack a couple in a little Tupperware box and put them in your change bag then if your baby gets hungry when you are out and about you have a ready made snack.
The only bad thing I would say about them is that they can create a real mess. My daughter who is 6 months old seems to like nothing better than to wipe it all in her hair, her ears and all over her clothes so If you like having a lovely clean baby then maybe they are not for you!.
I would definitely recommend these as a great first food for your little one as they are so versatile and portable, they can be a ready made food without needing heating up or preparing they are ready as quickly as you can get them out of the pack.
When I used them with my other children they seemed to love them for ages I had wondered if they would get bored with them once they got the taste for more flavors but they didn't seem to. Read the complete review |

Cow & Gate Baby Balance Grandpa's Sunday Lunch
by haybel19
When I started weaning my daughter we initially started with the Cow and Gate Fruit Purees, then started to incorporate some of the vegetable options such as the Cauliflower cheese and finally moved on to the main meals.
Grandpa's Sunday lunch was the first main meal we tried and as far as my daughter was concerned Granpa ... could keep it thank you very much.
Like the other Cow and Gate baby purees this is clearly marked with the stage (1) and the age from which it is suitable (4-6 months). It comes in a 125g jar and costs around 70p It can be brought from Supermarkets and chemists.
This puree is chicken and vegetables and there is no added salt or preservatives. It is bright orange in colour and is quite a thick puree compared to some of the others. We have found that the fruit purees are very smooth and thin, the vegetable ones are a little thicker and the main meals are thicker still and not quite as smooth.
It contains peas, carrot, tomatoe and sweetcorn as well as the chicken. However when I tasted it I could not pick out any individual flavours, and it most certainly tasted like baby food unlike some of the others. It also has a somewhat distinctive smell, the only way I can think to describe it is like dog food.
I had brought 4 jars as I often find with my daughter especially with main meals we have to try something a few times before she gets a taste for it. However feeding her this was a real battle of wills, she instantly took at dislike to it and no amount of silly noises, cajoling or persuasion would convince her otherwise.
I tried her with this one 3 separate occasion and each time she would scream as soon as she tasted it. As far as she was concerned Grandpa could keep it thank you very much.
However she has loved other main meal purees we have tried, but this is probably just down to her individual tastes. This may very well appeal to other children.
I think one of the things that put both myself and my daughter off was the smell. Also as a very brightly coloured puree, be very aware of what you and your child are wearing (and of anything in flinging distance) as it does stain even if you try and remove immediately.
This was not for us- but that could be more to do with personal taste than anything wrong with the product. However possibly dont do as we did and buy 4 jars until you know your child will eat it. A better solution would have been for us to buy one jar and to put some in a bowl. The remainder in the jar can be put in the fridge and kept for up to 48 hours allowing the child plenty of time to get used to the taste in smaller quantities so you can decide whether to buy more. Cow & Gate Baby Balance Apple & Banana Swirl
by haybel19
I have tried lots of different purees whilst weaning my daughter, as we had used Cow and Gate Milk this was the first range we tried, and the very first puree was this one- the Apple and Banana swirl and she LOVED it. MORE MORE MORE!
The Cow and Gate purees are marked with the age of baby they are appropriate for and the ... banana and apple swirl is a stage one product suitable from 4-6months and comes in a 125g jar. This was ideal for us to start with as having tried hungry baby milk to no avail we decided to start weaning our little girl at 4 months- so this one was perfect.
It is decribed Apple and Banana yoghurt with a hint of citrus. It does not have any added sugar or preservatives.
Cow and Gate purees available from supermarkets and chemists and like the other purees in the range costs around 70p per jar, although Boots sometimes have an offer where you can buy 10 jars for £5. However I do find this one harded to get hold of in shops, and normally order this online from Boots.
The puree itself is creamy coloured and is very very smooth and almost runny- its has the consistency of normal yoghurt. My daughter finds this quite easy to eat and loves the taste- she is always disapointed to reach the bottom of the jar- this is one of her absolute favourites even though she has had it lots of times and is one we buy time and again. This mummy has tried this and can confirm it really is very nice- it tastes mostly of banana with a hint of apple and does taste like fresh fruit would if made into yoghurt form. My daughter started to have this at 4months and found it easy to manage from the start.
The only downside is the glass jar- I would prefer it if this came in a carton or pouch as it would be easier to transport and less risk of breakage. Read the complete review |
