Hipp Organic Banana & Peach Breakfast

We have been told time and time again that the current NHS guidelines state babies shouldn't be weaned onto solid foods until they are at least six months old and until that time breast milk is the best thing for them. Unfortunately my son is classed as a 'hungry baby' even though he is small for his age and because of this and despite ... our best efforts with hungry baby formula, we have had to start weaning early.
We purchased a number of the Hipp powdered foods to try (purely because they were on special offer at the time) and this was one of them. For a first taste it is brilliant. Because you add water to your own preference we were able to make this as liquid as possible for our son to try and as he has gotten older we have started to make it thicker. At first we had a few funny faces due to the new flavour but it has banana in it, and I have been told by many people that most babies like banana due to its natural sweetness. My son will eat anything, as long as it has banana in so most new textures we try to get in banana flavour.
When we first started weaning we were warned that babies under six months can't digest gluten and other nasties, and from the list I was given by the health visitor these Hipp 4+ months products don't contain any of them. We have gone from having a little taste of these once a day, to breakfast, lunch and tea. So far we still use these cereals for breakfast for two reasons, the first is that he likes it and the second is that we can gauge how much he is eating as we can measure it into the formula pots that were going to waste, so even if we are out and about, we don't need to take the whole box, we just take the three way pot we have, and add it to water in a bowl when it comes to dinner time.
When we first purchased these I got them 3 for £5 in Tesco, and in the 6 weeks since, they still seem to have the same offer on.

Hipp Organic Banana & Peach Breakfast

I breastfeed my son and from the age of four months he seemed hungry very often. In spite of my very best efforts, he absolutely hates formula milk and that's when I decided to start him on mushy food.
All the advice I get from official sources (midwives, websites etc) is that you shouldn't wean babies until six months but I ... found out that most kids in my family get weaned around four months. Apparently they all have huge appetites!
So how did I end up choosing this? I didn't set out with any particular brand in mind. I think I went for this mostly because it says 'organic' on the packet, and is suitable from four months of age. Also, banana and peach sounded quite alright. I went through the ingredients list and about 40% was formula milk, so I figured it wouldn't be too bad to start my little one on this.
It comes packaged in a rectangular cardboard box which is mostly a light green all around with the above image on the front. It comes in a weight of 230 g, I haven't seen any other size. It costs a little more than £2, a bit less when on offer. On the inside, the cereal is contained in a sealed foil bag which can be easily removed from the box. The box has a tab on top to ensure easy opening and closing.
The cereal is beige coloured, with the consistency of coarse powder. There are some larger flakes mixed in as well, which I presume are banana flakes. There isn't much of a smell to speak of. When I tasted the cereal, I felt it a bit too sweet for me but my son seems to like it very much. You can tell there is banana flavour somewhere in there, but I didn't get much of peach coming through. Which I don't mind, because I really don't like peach.
Using this is very simple, just add boiled water to get the consistency of your preference. You can get it ready in a minute.
This product has got the Practical Parenting gold award and Prima Baby best value award but why I like it is of course because my son eats it with absolutely no complaints. Right from the first time he tasted it, he enjoys it very much. Initially I started out with two teaspoons made into a watery fluid, but now we are upto four or five spoons in a thick consistency. Now that he is eating well, I am trying to give him other things as well and cut the cereal down to once a day.
I had a few concerns about giving him food so early, but this cereal has not caused him any problems. He has not been constipated at all ( although I do make sure I give lots of water) and he has not had any allergic reactions.
I am very happy with this cereal and I am planning to try other flavours as well, but they seem a bit hard to find.
Other flavours from Hipp suitable from four months are Baby Rice and Apple, Orange and Banana flavour.
Ingredients- ( which they claim are all organic except some added vitamins and minerals)- 41% follow on milk, whey powder, vegetable oil, skimmed milk, rice flour, various vitamins and minerals, 3% peach powder and 3% banana flakes (which is a bit of a let down considering they have banana and peach written in huge bold letters on the front).
It states on the packet that it is gluten free, and contains no added sugars or preservatives.
Any how, as my son seems to be enjoying it and I cant find anything harmful in the list of ingredients, I am happy to recommend this product to you.

Hipp Organic Banana & Peach Dessert

My son turned 9 weeks old yesterday and for over 2 weeks he has been increasing his milk intake to the point where he was taking 6 oz every 2 hours. This wasn't feasible as it was affecting his sleeping and other routines as well, so we moved him onto the hungry baby milk just for night time to see if it helped. We got our night time ... routine back the first night on it, and within 3 days he was back to taking 6 oz every 4 hours, even through the day, but it was completely hungry baby milk that says it helps prevent the early onset of weaning. Well, the past few days my son has been taking 7 oz every 3-4 hours and drinking an entire bottle within 5 minutes. He only weighs 10 lb 6oz, so he wasn't taking too much but he seemed constantly hungry again so last night we decided to try the peach and banana sachet that we had been sent as a sample from Hipp. I only mixed a quarter of a sachet and put the rest in a storage tub for the rest of the week and it was really easy, just a tea spoon of water and it was mixed to a consistency just a little thicker than his milk.
I sat him in his seat and put a little bit on the spoon for him to try, he wasn't sure at first but after the first couple of tastes he was going mad for this taste. He ate the entire amount that I had made for him, then had his bottle as normal and slept through from 11pm until 4am as normal. The food didn't sit heavy on his tummy like the extra milk does, he wasn't sick with it, it didn't make him constipated and he hasn't had any reaction. I will be mixing him a little bit again tonight with his supper and hoping that we can get into a routine of tasting the same one for a few nights until he is used to the taste and consistency. The next one to try is one of the 4+ months fruit purées. Hopefully that will go just as well!
