Hipp Organic Vegetables with Noodles & Chicken
by kat1234
I try to give my son a mixed and balanced diet, consisting largely of meals I have cooked myself. From time to time, however, he does have a few ready made meals from a jar. These are much more convenient for feeding him when I am away from home. I have purchased him a few jars from the HIPP range as the brand appeals to me as they ... use only organic ingredients.
One meal that he has tried, and loved, is the Vegetables with Noodles and Chicken. This is available in jars for 7 months plus and slightly bigger jars for 10 months plus. The jar for 10 months, which I purchased, is 250g and costs just over £1. I purchased on a supermarket offer of 6 jars for £5 so it actually cost me a little less.
The jar is glass with a metal screw lid. Through the jar you can see the food inside which is an orange-red in colour. There are small bits of noodle contained. The organic vegetables contained are carrot, pea, tomatoes, onions and pepper and there is also organic chicken (although this makes up just 8%). The consistency of the meal is thick, but still a little sloppy. The pieces of noodle and small pieces of vegetables help baby to learn to cope with lumps and chew their food.
The jar does smell quite pleasant - I hate nothing more than feeding my son something that doesn't smell appetising to me. This smells tomatoey - as a meal like this should. My son seems to really enjoy this meal - although he cannot eat a full jar in one sitting as he has a pudding too. One jar contains two meals for us and the jar can be resealed and stored in the fridge for 48 hours after opening so this suits our needs. He loves the textures in the meal whilst not finding the chewing too taxing and laborious - it seems the consistency is just right.
The only thing about this jar is that it is extremely messy - it takes quite some wiping to get my baby's mouth clean, owing to the tomato based sauce. As for any attempts at self feeding.....well, we don't choose this jar for that! Overall though, a decent meal that seems to keep my boy full until his next meal and it must taste nice as he gobbles it all up! As a mum, I am also reassured by the organic ingredients as well as pleased with the practicality. Read the complete review |

Heinz Mum's Own Cottage Pie
by taramorg23
I am the first to admit that I am lazy when it comes to cooking. I am so tired most days after work etc that I often make something easy for myself. This often means that it is not suitable for my daughter who is 6 months. She eats a lot of finger food now which is easy to prepare but sometimes but she tends to play with the food a lot ... and squish it around so I do worry she isn't getting enough. I picked up a few of these jars from Asda where they costs 70p each or 7 for £5.
This cottage pie is a stage 2 food which the jar states is suitable for 7 months and over. This is on the basis that you start weaning on stage 1 at 6 months. I started weaning at 4 months so my daughter has been eating plain fruit and veg for months. As this is a stage 2 food it has a lumpier texture. The jar is also bigger it contains 200g. Checking the ingredients they are all suitable for 6 months and over.
The ingredients are listed as;
Carrots 20%, Potatoes 14%, Onions 7%, Peas 4%, Water, Whole Milk, Beef 9%, Cornflour, Unsalted Butter, Natural Flavouring, Yeast Extract, Herbs, Iron Sulphate.
You can either feed directly from the jar or you can spoon out the desired amount into a clean bowl. You can store the rest in the fridge for up to 48 hours. If you feed from the jar any uneaten food needs to be discarded.
You can heat the food either by standing in a bowl of warm water or as I prefer to do zapping it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds (per half jar).
The ingredients in the jar contain no added preservatives or colourings and no added salt or sugar.
When you open the jar it smells overwhelmingly of veg particularly the carrots. The food is a pale orange in colour. You can see lumps of carrot and peas in the food as well as little pieces of beef. The food has a nice consistency it is still runny but it has enough bits to help your baby learn how to chew food.
When I first started feeding my daughter savoury she hated it, no matter what combination of veg I tried she would spit it all out. I thought that this may be because the food was a little bland because as soon as we were able to try stage 2 which have a lot more flavour she would devour most of the jar in one sitting. I think she also prefers to chomp on little pieces of food as she smiles when I give her this. I have also tried this and it is rather tasty, because it has meat it adds to the flavour and it tastes like a mashed up cottage pie. The only downside is because the food is orange it can stain, as my daughter is teething she likes to shove her hand in her mouth while the food is in there so a plastic or disposable bib will come in handy to prevent any stains!
This is now a firm favourite in our house. 5 out of 5 from us. Read the complete review |

Cow & Gate Baby Balance Pure Baby Rice
by taramorg23
As a first time mum I was given various advice about weaning, when I decided to start weaning at 4 months my health visitor told me to start on baby rice. Various books I had read also said about simple tastes and baby rice. I bought a box of this in Asda it cost £1.60 for a 100g box.
On the front of the box it states that ... the rice is suitable from 4 months and over. It contains 100% pure baby grade rice. It is also organic. It doesn't contain any sugar or salt and it fortified with vitamin B1. The rice is also gluten free.
You can mix up the rice with baby's usual milk or water. As I breastfeed my daughter I had to express milk to mix in with the rice. This firstly was a pain as I decided early on expressing milk isn't for me and it's just so time consuming. After I had mixed up a few spoons of this rice I thought it looked awful. It had a consistency of wallpaper paste no matter how much milk I added. I decided to try it with my daughter anyway and she spat the lot out. I thought this was because she wasn't used to eating however I even tried it with formula milk and tasted it myself, it has to be the most bland thing I have ever tasted and I found it really gloopy and sticky. I gave up on this after just 2 days and moved straight onto fruit and veg purees which my daughter took to really well and ate no problem.
In conclusion I can only say she hated the taste of this as everything else I offered she took really well.
I wouldn't recommend this. Read the complete review |
