Advantages: Taste good, suitable for all stages/ages, convenient, no chilled storage required
Disadvantages: a little costly; take advantage of special offers
We, that is my 8 month old son and myself, have tried many of the Cow & Gate jars, as I like to know what he is eating for myself. I always taste his food before I give him anything new, and sometimes when mimicking eating to encourage him to eat in the early days of weaning.
I do cook a lot for him at home but as we are often out and about we use jars for convenience and love the Cow & Gate Baby Balance range.
The jar itself is of a small size, around 100ml and usually costs somewhere in the region of 39p - 50p in most supermarkets, but I have seen them on sale in our local corner shop for 63p!! The label on the jar show pictures on what ingredients are in the product itself, i.e. apples and bananas!! The most important part of the label to me is the 1,2,3 symbol. Cow & Gate do this with all of their products to indicate what stage the food is suitable for, 1 being from 4 months, 2 from 6-7 months, 3 from 9-10 months etc, so you can see at a glance if it would be suitable for your child. However, this is to be used as a guide only, some 7 month olds will not want lumps of any description, whereas some 7 month olds have teeth and can chew.
The apple and banana swirl smells delicious and tastes as good as that. It is completely smooth in texture and therefore suitable for all stages. My lad loves these, he loves apples and bananas anyway so this is the perfect combination for him.
I do worry a bit about all the crap that pre-pared foods in general contain but with the strict legislations on baby foods I trust that these sorts of things wont be harmful to him, but use them only for convenience when out and about.
In summary I think that it is a great product, with a fabulous smell, delicious taste and probably the most convenient way to food your child on the go. But not the cheapest! You will quite often find baby jars on special offers in supermarkets, such as, 10 for £4.00, so I stock up when I see those offers to make them a bit better value.
Another bonus is that they are stored at an ambient temerature so do not need to go in the fridge or to be kept chilled whilst on your travels. The jars can also be stored in the fridge once opened for up to 48 hours, so if little one is not a big eater you can save the rest for the following day, as long as it goes in the fridge and is not re-heated.
