Cow & Gate Baby Balance Pure Baby Rice
Advantages: Nice and gentle on Jaydens tummy
Disadvantages: None apart from messy feed times
Ever since Jayden came out of hospital after a week in the Special Care Baby Unit he has had a big appetite and loves he loves his food, he is now at a stage where his milk along isn't satisfying him and he seems hungry still after finishing his bottle, I didn't want to buy him milk for hungrier babies has I have heard bad things about this from my health visitor and midwife so I decided to get him some baby rice to help satisfy him. I wasn't really sure what brand I was going to buy so decided to have a look to see what I could find that was suitable, I discovered Cow and Gate First Spoonfuls Pure Baby Rice, it was recommended as being suitable for babies of Jayden's age so I purchased a box to try him on.
The Cow and Gate First Spoonfuls Pure Baby Rice comes in a rectangle box, the top half of the box is red with a large Cow and Gate logo at the top along with the age that this product is suitable for. In the middle of the box are the words "First Spoonfuls Pure Baby Rice" this is written in blue on a white background. Right at the bottom of the box are statements about the product, the rest of the box is taken up with a picture of a smiling baby. The sides of the box contains various bits of information about the product such as the nutritional information and ingredients, on the back of the box is further information about the baby rice and how it benefits your baby along with the directions of use and other products available in this range. The information is clearly written in sections making it easy to read and follow. Inside the box is a plain silver plasticy foil bag, this contains the baby rice keeping fresh and preventing it from spilling out of the box.
The Baby Rice
For some reason I thought the Cow and Gate First Spoonfuls Pure Baby Rice would be like regular rice only smaller suitable for babies, however I was surprised to discover that the rice was just like a powder with no fragrance to it at all. This rice is suitable for babies from 4 to 6 months onwards, it is ideal as a babies first taste of food as it is gentle and mixed with your babies regular milk so that it has a familiar taste, the rice when made is smooth making it easy for you baby to swallow with no lumps to chew. I particularly liked the look of this rice as the information about the product states that it contains no artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives, it also has no added milk, lactose, egg and is gluten free, this rice is also suitable for vegetarians, there is nothing in this baby rice that could be an irritant for your baby it certainly is gentle for your baby. Cow and Gate First Spoonfuls Pure Baby Rice contains Vitamin B which is important for babies growth and described as ideal way to start your baby in solid food. When the baby rice is made with your babies own milk it looks just like semolina and to be honest it tastes a bit like it too, it is white in colour and of a thickish consistency although the consistency id dependant on how you prepare the rice and how much milk you add, when the rice is made there is no smell to it at all, it is more like a smooth paste.
How to Prepare
Preparing the Cow and Gate First Spoonfuls Pure Baby Rice is simply, you put one spoonful (your babies feeding spoon) of the baby rice into a bowl and then add 10 spoonfuls of your babies prepared milk to it and then stir, you can change the consistency of the rice by adding more of less of the milk, I personally add 8 to 10 spoonfuls of milk to the rice, this makes it the perfect constancy, thick enough to make it different to Jayden's milk and to get him use to eating solids, but not so thick that he struggles with it.
Price and Availability
Cow and Gate First Spoonfuls Pure Baby Rice is available from a variety of shops including Boots, Superdrug (and various other chemists that sell baby food) as well as most supermarkets, I have seen this product available in Tesco when I have done my shopping. The 100g box of baby rice is sold for between £1.65 and just over £2.00 I personally think this was very good value for money as the box of rice will last a long time, to start with you only need one spoonful of the rice so a large box like this will keep your baby going for several weeks, obviously the amount of time a box lasts depends on how much rice your baby has at each meal but for Jayden at the moment this box is definitely going to last him a while.
When I purchased the Cow and Gate Baby Rice I was a bit concerned as to what Jayden's reaction would be, he was only ever use to his milk but I was hopeful that he would accept this as it would taste familiar being made with his regular milk. I started Jayden off with having the rice with his tea time bottle and gave it to him before his milk, I was very surprised to discover that he loved it, as soon as he tasted it he smiled and once he had finished one spoonful he kicked his legs for more. I now give Jayden his baby rice twice a day, he has the rice first followed by the remainder of his bottle, I have certainly noticed a difference he no longer seems to be dissatisfied with his milk and seems more content after each meal. I have had no problems with the rice upsetting his stomach and he has taken to it extremely well, at the moment he only has a very small amount of the rice but it is just enough to make a difference. The only thing I have noticed is that if Jayden is really hungry he does get a bit frustrated eating the rice as it is more time consuming that drinking milk from a bottle, however this is something he is getting use to, feeding Jayden the rice is quite a messy process and he does end up covered in it especially when he tries to help, however you can really tell that he is enjoying it. For me this is an ideal product to give him as I know there is nothing in it to irritate his stomach and it is a gentle way to introduce him to solids, the rice is reasonably priced and long lasting making it excellent value for money. I will certainly continue to buy this rice and would highly recommend it to anyone as would Jayden.
Summary: One both myself and Jayden recommend
