When my daughter was 4 months old, she was weaned onto Cow and Gate baby milk. My previous children had SMA, but it caused some constipation, so we elected to try Cow & Gate.

The first packet I opened contained a fine layer of brown powdery substance on the surface of the powdered milk batch and I was worried about using the batch. I had no idea what this brown substance was and on further examination, there were small brown lumps within the top few cm's of the packet.

I complained to Cow & Gate and followed it up with a letter and the actual packet that was contaminated.

I was sent a fantastic 2 page letter explaining that the foil packs are heat sealed and sometimes, some powder gets caught up in the seal and cooks to a light brown colour. Furthermore, it is harmless to the baby and of no danger to the rest of the batch. They re-assured me that their product was safe to use and how their next step was to alter the sealing process to avoid this happening again AND sent me £10 vouchers.

They called me a week later to ensure that I had received the letter and was okay with the responce.

I used Cow and Gate products right up to my baby's first year and couldn't have been happier.
