Advantages: Handy when on the move. No artifical additives
Disadvantages: I prefer home cooked food.
When we went on holiday abroad two weeks ago I knew that I wouldn't be able to take my pureed food with us for Rhys to eat, so I decided that, against my better judgment I would have no choice but to take some ready made food with me. Its not that I have anything in particular against people that choose to use jars to feed their baby, as it is personal choice, but I have made the choice to make my own fresh food for my baby, this way I know exactly what he is eating.
Whilst in Tesco I discovered the Ella's kitchen range, the thing that attracted me is that it is organic and has 100% fruit and vegetables in it, with nothing nasty added. The second thing I noticed was that they were very funny combinations of flavours, but I figured that they must know what they are doing so I decided to give them a go. The flavour I chose to start off with was broccoli, pear and peas!! A 120g foil packet cost me 71p.
Another good thing about this range is that they come in foil packets so are a bit easier to transport than glass jars. Also, there is quite a lot in each packet, as I had only been weaning Rhys for 2 weeks he was still only eating a tiny amount, so one packet lasted us three days, therefore we only had to take two packets away with us and these lasted us the week.
Each of the different flavours is in a very brightly coloured foil packet according to what the main flavour of the food is. The one I am reviewing came in a bright green packet as it contained Broccoli, pear and peas. The lid of the packet is a screw top which I again found very handy as you can screw it back on once you have poured out what you require, this then keep the food fresh.
This range is suitable from 4 months plus, so if you start weaning your baby early, as I did then you can use this right from the start. The food can be served warm or cold, depending on your babies tastes, personally I always slightly heat Rhys' baby food as I wouldn't like to eat cold food, so don't think he should have to!! As previously mentioned there are no artificial flavours or colours in this range just simply whatever fruit or vegetable are stated on the packet. To store this food you can keep it in a cupboard before it has been opened, once opened it must be stored in a fridge and will keep for upto 48 hours.
I poured the food into a bowl for my son, the liquid is a very dark green and is quite runny, so it is not a thick puree, it is more of a slightly thick liquid. Although I hate broccoli I did have a taste, the first thing I noticed was how very sweet it was!! The flavour of the pear could be tasted and also the flavours of the broccoli and pea!! I personally didn't really like the taste of it, but my son absolutely loved it!!! He couldn't get enough and would have eaten a lot more than I served him!! There are lots of other flavours in the range and he has liked them all!! These aren't something that I will be using on an everyday basis but it is good to know that there are some healthy baby foods on the shelves that don't contain a lot of hidden nasty things!!!
Summary: Great for taking on holiday
