Advantages: Handy little sachets that you can carry in your handbag
Disadvantages: slightly more expensive, but well worth it
Since I finished breastfeeding my son, I looked for a suitable follow on milk for him as he was over 6 months old. He is a vegetarian so I thought that follow-on milk would be better for him as it is richer in iron than standard formula.
When trying to choose his milk, I noticed that most follow on milks had to be made up "in a batch" which I do not like as it does not suit the way I do my bottles. I am very unconventional in the way I do my baby's bottles. Instead of adding the milk when I boil the water. I put the boiled water in the bottle and then add the milk later as and when I need the bottles. This way there is always a constant supply of bottles with cooled boiled water and none gets wasted. (Made up milk has to be discarded after 24hrs and I found that I was throwing it away all the time - with this way there is no wastage.)
Farley's sachets of milk are very handy for when you are on the move. I don't use them very often when at home they are slightly more expensive than standard tins milk. I still use the SMA white for 6oz feeds and 4oz home bottles, but the slight extra cost is definitely worth it for the convenience they offer when out and about.
Just before I go out, I sterilise two or three ready washed up bottles and add 4oz (113mls) of near boiling water to them. I then put 2 or 3 sachets of milk in my handbag. This is ideal as by the time my baby needs the milk, the water has cooled and I have a bottle of warm water and a sachet of milk to add to it. It means that I can make up the bottle when I need it, the bottle is nice & warm (I don’t have to get it warmed at McDonalds!) I can also feed my baby without the risk of the milk going off and giving m
y baby food poisoning.
Incidentally, I have wide necked Avent bottles which make adding the milk powder to the water really easy.
My son took to the Farley’s milk really well - he has used both the Second milk and follow on milk sachets. He likes it and it seems to settle in his stomach really well. I have noticed that occasionally he has "possetted" a little bit of milk after the SMA white milk, but he has never done so after the Farley’s milk. I would use the Farley’s all the time if it sold the powder in a tin that I could make up all the feeds myself rather than the all in one batch!
I would recommend these handy sachets and the boiled water to anyone. It really is the easiest way to feed a baby safely when on the go.
