Advantages: Tasty, easy to eat, requires no preparation

Disadvantages: Pack is not resealable

My baby son is 14 months old and I am always on the look out for finger foods that he can safely eat on his own. He was diagnosed as lactose intolerant at 3 months so until now we have had to avoid any products containing lactose or other dairy ingredients. We have followed a close programme set out for us by our Community Dietician and we are now at the stage of trying to introduce some dairy products into his diet, this will be a slow process but hopefully will be successful.

I bought Heinz Organic Biscotti to trial with my son and so far they have not caused his system any upset. The Biscotti come in a foil pack, containing 12 biscuits, they are a bit like flattened fingers, and the pack is 60g in weight. The biscuits themselves are about 7-8 cm in length they are a golden colour with Heinz ingrained in the middle of the biscuit, there is no strong smell of them, but there are quite crunchy and are sweet to taste. They remind me very much of Rich Tea biscuits except a bit sweeter, I have tried them out.

I give these to my son as an occasional treat and he would only ever eat 2 at most at a time. The biscuits are a very good shape for little baby hands to hold and they break very easily when they are bitten, even if the child had no teeth the biscuit would eventually break off in the mouth as they seem to dissolve quite well. We have had no episodes of choking but I wouldn't leave a child unattended while eating. My son does seem to enjoy these little biscuits and does make very satisfied noises when he is eating them.

The Biscotti are recommended for babies from 6 months, my only negative about the product is that the packet is not resealable, but these don't usually get a chance to go soft as they are eaten quite quickly. My 5 year old likes to eat the occasional Biscotti when he sees his younger brother with one.

These Biscotti are made by Heinz, more information on this product and other Heinz products can be found at www.heinz.co.uk

The biscuits are described as "organic" and have been certified by Bioagricert, these are also free of GM ingredients. There is a list of ingredients and nutritional information on the back of the foil packet, but I won't list these as there doesn't seem to be anything very different. The biscuits are widely available in most supermarkets and other places that sell baby foods and range in price from 55p-85p, very often baby foods can be found on 3 for 2 offers. I would recommend these Biscotti as a handy snack for children.

Summary: A tasty handy snack for babies and children
