Advantages: ..

Disadvantages: ..

Whilst in Boots the other day my boys were becoming a little whingy and whiney as they were due something to eat. I decided to buy them a quick snack to keep them going until dinner. Browsing the baby snack shelves I spotted Heinz Organic Biscotti.

A silver and pale orange foil bag containing 12 delicious organic fingers for babies and toddlers apparently - this is what it says on the front of the bag. The bag cost me 99p - so no Boots advantage points to be collected there unfortunately. The foil bag they are in maintain the biscuits freshness and taste. On the front of the bag you can see a small picture of the biscuit fingers themselves, which give you an idea of what you are going to find inside.

I didn't read the packet before giving them to my boys as they were coming up 17months old now and I knew they would be an appropriate snack for them. Afterwards I had a little read and on the front it says these finger biscuits are suitable for babies 6months onwards when crushed with milk and for babies 9months onwards as a finger food.

When reading the back of the bag I'm told these biscuits are made using a 'unique Italian recipe and the highest quality great tasting organic ingredients'.

They are also 'specially designed to fit perfectly in little hands and dissolve easily in little mouths, they help to develop hand to mouth co-ordination skills as your baby learns to self feed. With 12 delicious fingers in each handy pack, Heinz Biscotti are ideal for babies and toddlers on the go'.

These biscuits seemed to have quite a bit to live up to. Of course me and my twins had to put them to the test together. My friends baby helped with the test to though as she is alot younger.

Do they fit into childrens hands?
Well my boys being 17months now have quite large hands but my friends baby who is just 7months has tried them too. They are a perfect size length, width and thickness to fit in a childs hands. They are not heavy, although not too light so a younger baby would be aware they are holding something. They are rounded at the ends so nothing to hurt a babies hands either. Although they can break quite easily if squeezed to hard or held with two hands they can be snapped just as easily too.

Do they dissolve in the mouth?
Of course I had to try, I love my food especially snacking on my boys lol! They have a slight crunch to them at first but as soon as they feel the heat of your mouth and the wetness of your tongue you can feel the biscuit softening and begin to melt in your mouth. The crunch is not hard enough for a baby to struggle with. These would be perfect for a baby to gum through whilst teething or just beginning to eat independantly with finger foods. As for my boys eating them they had no troubles. They have teeth top and bottom now and were able to crunch through them and eat them comfortably. Swallowing for them was easy too as they softened and become smooth in their mouths.

I was impressed so far..

Do they really aid with hand mouth co-ordination skills?
My friends baby who has only just began eating finger foods took to them really well. Having only been having baby foods to eat on her own for about a week or so now she knew within a few minutes that she had to lift her hand to her mouth to take a bit. They have a lovely taste to them too, which of course would encourage a young baby to lift their hand even more towards their mouth to take another bite. So yes they pass this test!

A perfect snack for on the go?
These are a perfect and ideal snack for when you are on the go, I don't find they are as messy as some baby snacks so if you are looking for a quick snack to keep your child going through the day in between meals these are very convenient. However if you want to keep them fresh it's best to keep them in a tub with a lid as the packets once opened are like crisp packets and can't be sealed.

As for the taste, well I really enjoyed them. They had a sweetness to them but not sugary sweet. They were a very light snack for myself, so would be just right for a young child. They are not flavoursome as such but there is a lovely, pleasant and sweet taste to them that not only satisfies my boys and my friends little one but me as well. I would definitely purchase these again as a quick on the go snack whilst out and about.

These biscuits have ...
no added preservatives
no artifical flavours or colours
no added salt

They are suitable for vegetarians and are also egg free.

Although 99p could be seen as a little pricey just for a quick baby snack, I found it was money well spent and would most definitely buy them again if out and about and my boys need a snack to see them through until their main meal.
