Hipp Mango and Banana Melba
Advantages: Good quality
Disadvantages: None for us
For the last few weeks I have been introducing Jayden to solids, I prefer to make all of Jayden's food myself rather buying the jars and packets of food, however I recently received some coupons for free jars of Hipp Organic food as well as several money off coupons. It seemed a shame to waste them so I decided to purchase Jayden a few jars and packets of food using the vouchers, however I decided to buy some different flavours that he had not tried yet, that way if I came across something he did not like I had not wasted a lot of money buying the ingredients to make it myself. Using one of the coupons I received I decided to buy him Hipp Organic Mango and Banana Melba, Jayden has had banana before on its own and loved it, however he has never tried mango so thought this would be something new for him to try, me and my husband both love mango so if he liked it this would be something he could have with us.
The Hipp Organic Mango and Banana Melba comes in a small clear glass jar allowing you to see the pureed food inside, it has a label wrapped around the whole of the jar. The front of the label has the Hipp logo consisting of a white heart shape with Hipp Organic written inside in different colours, just below this in a green box is the flavour of the food written in a darker green. The rest of the front of the label is covered with slices of both banana and mango, the age that this product is suitable for also appears in the top corner in a small pink box. The back of the label is totally green with dark green writing on it, this contains all of the product information including ingredients, information about the food and feeding advice. The jar has a small green and gold metal lid on the top of the lid is written "The Original Organic Baby Food Co", this lid simply screws on and off.
The Hipp Organic Mango and Banana Melba is basically a dark yellowy coloured puree, there are no lumps what so ever in it, it is just an extremely smooth paste. I had no idea what to expect with the pre-made jars of food and didn't expect them to be as tasty as homemade, however when I opened the jar of mango and banana melba I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it smelt, you could really smell the mango in this so I was hopeful that it would taste as good as what it smelt. Whenever I make Jayden a new flavour to try I always taste a little bit to make sure it tastes ok and the jar of Hipp Organic Mango and Banana Melba was no different, and again I was pleasantly surprised it was actually really tasty, you could really taste both the mango and the banana it tasted lovely and fresh and naturally sweet, however the real test was going to be when I gave it to Jayden.
Hipp Organic Mango and Banana Melba is specifically designed for small babies and is aimed at babies from 4 months onwards, this particular jar of food is gluten free, contains no added sugar only naturally occurring sugars in the fruit, there are no added milk products, GM or preservatives and it is also suitable for vegetarians. The information on the back of the jar also states that ingredients are picked at the peak of their ripeness and individually steam cooked to keep the food full of flavour and goodness.
The feeding guidelines are also printed on the back of the jar, obviously these are only a guide and all babies are different, however it is worth reading through them before using the product for the first time. These guidelines include
* Always stir the jar with a plastic spoon and put the required amount into a clean bowl
* Serve at room temperature or stand in a bowl of hot water to warm, if using a microwave take care as hot spots can occur
* Always check temperature of the food before feeding your baby
* Once open replace the lid and store in the fridge, once open use within 3 days.
* Never re-heat baby food
* For advise on when to start weaning consult your health visitor
* Check that the lid and jar are undamaged before feeding
These points are just common sense really however it is important that they are followed at al times when feeding your baby.
Price and Availability
Hipp Organic Mango and Banana Melba is available from a variety of shops including most supermarkets and chemists which have a baby section. I purchased my jar from Tesco during my weekly shop, the 125g of food cost just 78p, although I didn't pay anything for mine as I had a coupon for a free jar of Hipp Organic food. I do think that 78p is quite good value for money as this jar is said to contain 2 servings of food, however I personally do find it works out cheaper to make your own food, but should I need to purchase some jars of pre-made food for days out and so on I would be more than happy to pay out for these jars. They are also currently on offer for 10 jars fro £5.00 should you need to stock up.
Jayden has now finished his jar of Hipp Organic Mango and Banana Melba and I am pleased to say he loved it, when I first gave it to him he took the first couple of spoonfuls slowly as it was a totally new flavour for him, however he soon realised how tasty it was and tucked in eating the lot, he was the same with the second bowl he had of this as well.
The jar states that it contains 2 servings of food, however I find it contains just over 2, Jayden starting weaning earlier than the 6 months as his milk just was not satisfying him which was why we started introducing small amounts of pureed food so his portion sizes are probably a little smaller than stated on the back of the jar.
The Mango and Banana Melba as I have mentioned is tasty and I am happy to feed this to Jayden as it contains nothing artificial that could be bad for him, it is definitely worth the money, I actually used this jar of food on a day out as I had put the pots of homemade food in the freezer and was concerned that they would not thaw out in time for his lunch while we were out, the jar was extremely handy as I could use the amount that I needed and then save the rest for another meal time.
Whilst I do still prefer to make Jayden's food myself rather than buying pre-made food I would definitely purchase this again in the future should I need to, also I have discovered that Jayden loves mango so I will be giving him this again in the future. This is definitely one I would recommend to anyone
Summary: My baby loves it
