Advantages: None for us.

Disadvantages: Product caused an upset tummy, wouldnt use again

My daughter has never been a great sleeper and although I had hoped she would be sleeping through by 6 months, the reality was that she was still waking for milk once or twice a night.

I had seen an advert in a magazine for Goodnight Milk, and as I was desperate for a good nights sleep for both of us I thought I would give it a go. The product is described as an 'Especially satisfying Follow-on Milk with added organic cereals'.

The product was £4.98 for 350g from Tesco, so for its sixe its a bit more expensive than normal milks, but you are only advised to use it once a day so it should last a while. It comes in a large(which is recyclable) with a plastic lid, and inside the lid is a ring pull top. The tin tells me that the product is a specially formulated bedtime milk, gluten free and easy to suggest.

Inside is a creamy coloured powder which looks alot like milkpowder. It also has a scoop in there to measure out the correct amount of powder when making up your babies feed. The instructions on the tin tell me to boil some water, leave it to cool for 30 minutes then to add one scoop for every fluid ounce of water. Its recommended that you add all the powder to two thirds of the water, mixing it thoroughly and then adding the rest of the water. This all seems a little complicated, but I duly follow the instructions and I am left with a bottle filled with milk that looks alot creamier than other powdered baby milks. It reminded me alot like ovaltine

The tin does tell you to use a fast flow teat as the product is a bit thicker than usual. I use fast flow teats usually so this isnt a problem. However my daughter still seemed to be having real problems getting the milk out, and despite the fact I shook the bottle, and mixed it with a fork like the tin recommends, there was still lumps in it, and a residue at the bottom of the bottle. To be honest I was left wondering if my daughter had had enough to keep her full all night, or whether she would be hungry even earlier than normal.

Now lots of us will have been told stories about how our parents put rusks in our milk as children, and this just seems like a more modern version of that, but if it works then its a thumbs up for me.

Except it managed to cause more problems. My daughter did go longer than she normally does. I fed her this milk at 7.30pm and she dint wake up at 10.30 like she usually does, and I was feeling very confident that I might get a full nights sleep, a real luxury. I was awoken about 2.30 by my daughter screaming and crying, pulling her knees up like she had a bad tummy. She refused any milk or water, and spent along time whimpering to herself. She finally cried herself back to sleep about 4am. She was very grouchy and miserable the next day and off her food. Her dirty nappies were bright yellow too.

I cannot say for definate whether this milk caused this, but I decided not to use it again and we havent had a repeat of the kind of upset we had after using it.

I feel bad writing a bad review for the product based on one experience, but I am just being honest. I dont know if my daughter had an allergy to one of the ingredients, but I cant recommend it and wont be using it again.

The listed ingredients are Organic skimmed milk, organic vegetable oils (palm, rapeseed, sunflower oils), organic corn starch, organic lactose, organic partially demineralised whey powder**, organic rice flakes, organic buckwheat flakes, emulsifier (soya lecithin), calcium carbonate, vitamin C, potassium chloride, L-tryptophan, iron diphosphate, vitamin E, niacin, zinc oxide, pantothenic acid, copper sulphate, vitamin A, thiamin (vitamin B1), vitamin B6, zinc sulphate, riboflavin (vitamin B2), potassium iodate, manganese sulphate, folic acid, vitamin K, sodium selenate, biotin, vitamin D, vitamin B12.

So I have resigned myself to broken nights now!

Summary: Not for us.
