Advantages: Baby is well fed
Disadvantages: Expensive
I?ve been using SMA milk both white and Gold since I gave up breastfeeding when my son was six weeks old. He wasn?t thriving enough on breast milk so I decided to use SMA on the recommendation of my Health Visitor and he loves it, there have been no more screams after two hours of feeding and I can monitor how much he is drinking each day. I have such a happy and contented baby now, as I know he gets a good supply of milk each day. SMA milk, both white and gold is intended to replace breast milk when mothers cannot breastfeed. SMA Gold comes with a yellow lid and is for newborns to about 6 months and SMA white, which comes in a blue lid, is for the hungrier baby when the Gold isn?t filling them up enough. SMA Gold contains nutrients, which occur naturally in breast milk like LCPs which are important for eye and brain development. Nucleotides for building blocks for growth and development and immunity, Beta Carotene to develop the immune system, skin and body tissue and selenium, which is a key antioxidant for, balanced nutrition. Gold also has low sodium content. SMA White contains the same nutrients as the Gold except for the LCPs, its specifically designed so it gives the baby the impression that it feels more full after a feed. I combine both products so my baby gets the best of both. SMA can be bought from most supermarkets like Tescos and other retail outlets like Boots, Mothercare and Superdrug. Prices vary from shop. A tin of 900grams usually sells around £5.95. SMA also comes in ready to use cartons large and small, I haven?t bought a large carton before, but the small 250ml carton costs about 47p. The milk powder is a lemon colour and all tins come with it?s own little scoop spoon. All you need to provide is a knife to level off the feed on the scoop, a kettle and a sterilised bottle. Easy as pie. It is more expensive than breastfeeding as my son usually gets through a tin a week and it will be more when he
gets older! But bottle-feeding is so much easier, I can share the feeds with my husband and it's far more convenient when were out! I think the ready to use cartons are a fabulous invention and very handy for a day out. The carton can be opened and served immediately without warming the milk up; all you need is a sterilised bottle to pour it into. Preparing the feed from the tin container takes about 40 minutes so it's best to make several bottles up the night before. You have to boil fresh water first and then pour and leave in bottles for 40 minutes so the water is cooled down, then add the number of scoops needed for the size of the feed you want, the tin has an excellent guideline table on the side which you can follow for the age of your baby. The amount of scoops per feed get higher as your baby gets older but the amount of feeds per day gets lower. Once feeds are made up in sterilised bottles or an opened carton, you can store the SMA in the fridge for up to 24 hrs, but once out of the fridge you must always throw away unfinished feeds. I have recently put my baby on to the hungrier baby feed, and have found this ideal for the last feed before bed time, he is actually sleeping through the night now since he has taken this! I would recommend SMA to any mother thinking of using formula as a top up feed or in changing over to full bottle feeding. Both me and my baby are much happier now!
