Advantages: SMA Gold - first milk suitable from birth. Holds all the nuitrients that a new born needs

Disadvantages: Personally found the formula to be rather rich

My daughter was born a month prematurely, so the hospital gave me a variety of baby first milks to choose from. SMA was a milk formula that I know I was fed on as a baby; therefore I didn't hesitate to give this to my child.
Throughout my whole pregnancy, I was definate about breastfeeding. Due to her being born early, my milk hadn't come through yet and the SMA Gold formula was cup fed to her.

My daughter was fed this formula for most of the week that I remained in hospital, as her main feed; and used as a top-up, when I was later able to breastfeed. I personally feel that she didn't take to this formula well at all. For majority of the week, she possetted (bought back up)quite a lot of each feed; which at the time was quite worrying due to her low and then reducing birth weight. She also did not drink a great deal of the feed. This may be because it was a little too rich, but as it is not advised for the formula to be weakend and in this case the formula was ready to serve, there was not a lot I could do about it at the time. I have also recently discovered, that feeding my daughter milk formula from such a young age, has caused her ecexma to develope much earlier and maybe even worse that it would have done if I had breastfed her from the start.

From the time I was discharged up until about a month ago I have been breastfeeding my 4 month old daughter sucessfully, which has helped her weight gain and health. I am greatful that there were milk formula's such as SMA available to mothers that cannot breastfeed, but do advide other mums to seek out the most appropiate type for their child, as there now is a variety of formulas out on the market for special cases, for babies that cannot keep their feeds down, for example.
