Advantages: Less windy, comes in a variety of sizes

Disadvantages: No leveller in the pack, may cause constipation

We have been using SMA Gold for two weeks now, having previously tried Aptamil for a couple of weeks and then switching to Cow & Gate for two months. Both of these milks made my daughter very windy, despite us giving her gripe water/Infacol and trying anti colic bottles.

She was noticeably less windy after just the first day on SMA Gold. She also seems to be enjoying her bottles more, maybe it tastes better, I wouldn't know!

As with other formula brands, the product comes with a scoop that is especially made to provide the correct amount of powder: 1 scoop to 1oz of water.

I also like that you can buy the tins of formula in two different sizes - the smaller tin is handy for keeping at nan's house maybe, and the cartons of ready made formula also come in a variety of sizes. It used to be a pain having to lug several small cartons of Cow & Gate around if we were out for the day, at least with SMA Gold you have the option of a 1 litre carton that will keep in the fridge for 48 hours once opened.

The only thing I would say is prepare for their number twos to change drastically!

The only downside I can think of with SMA Gold is that you don't get the handy formula leveller that you get in the corner of the Aptamil and Cow & Gate tubs. Still that's only a small point that can easily be overcome by using a knife and doesn't affect the formula itself in any way.

UPDATE: Since my original review I have had to take my daughter off SMA Gold as although initially she seemed better on it, over time it was apparent that she was becoming more and more constipated, distressed and unsettled. I have now changed her to Cow & Gate Omneo Comfort and she is much improved.

Summary: Not as good as I first thought
