Vitabiotics Wellkid Baby & Infant
by icklekittykat
Like another reviewer, I only found out recently that you could buy vitamin supplements for small children, I had never really looked into it before. However, my daughter is 2 and has suffered from frequent colds, flus, coughs and a few tummy bugs over the winter. I thought this would improve as the weather warmed up (a bit!) but she ... has a severe, persistent cough and a colleague recommended trying a vitamin supplement. She is also a fussy eater and I am concerned her illnesses are not helped by this so anything I can do to top her up is great in my book!
I wanted a product which did everything - vitamins, minerals and omega 3, which this one does. On the packaging it says it contains the following:
Vitamins A, C and D
B complex vitamins, including B6 and B12.
Vitamin D3 which helps support the health of bones.
Vitamin E.
Minerals iron, zinc and copper.
It also has flaxseed oil which contains omega 3s so it really is a good all rounder.
In terms of the price, depending on where you buy it, it averages at around £4 per 150ml bottle which will last 2 months for under 3 - 6 month olds (at 2.4ml per day) and 1 month for 6 months - 5 years old (at 5ml per day). I didn't find a huge number of alternatives for this age group but there were a few shop own brand cheaper ones but they did not contain such a comprehensive list of vitamins and minerals. What's more, this one doesn't contain any sweeteners or artificial flavours or colours. I feel Vitabiotics as a brand is worth the extra cost, I usually trust Vitabiotics as a brand, they have won a lot of awards so I feel I am getting a high quality product.
In terms of the product itself, it smells strongly of orange, in that way that medicines smell like they are trying to hide something nasty! It is a pleasant enough smell. Colour wise, my daughter said "Mummy pouring out mud" when I poured it for the first time, it is a deep orangey brown which isn't massively appealing. I tried a little myself and thought it tasted ok, a pleasant orange flavour just masking what I assume is the malt and a light vanilla tint as well. Sadly, my daughter hated it and spat it out but fear not! I have successfully hidden it in smoothies she likes as they have orange in them so far so good. I guess the trade off is having a brown liquid which tastes "OK" but has no unnatural additives in it, or something pink and appealing which tastes delicious but is full of sugar.
I'm not expecting to see a massive difference in her but this evening after she had it she really did seem to perk up. I will wait and see if her cough goes any time soon!
All in all it is an expensive item but some might say essential for piece of mind for parents of picky eaters with frequent colds. The taste is quite strong and the price quite high so I may try another brand and see which she prefers. Worth a try but shop around for the best price - at the moment (May 2013) Boots have a 3 for 2 deal which makes it around £3 if you buy 3. Read the complete review |

Mothercare Little Circus Bath Thermometer
by InchyInchy
Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer
When our little bundle of joy was born she was lucky enough to receive quite a lot of presents - mostly in the form of pretty clothes, but also hidden amongst the abundance of gift wrap where some more practical items such as the Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer. ... Initially I was really quite sceptical about using a bath thermometer or in fact needing any bath thermometer, because surely you could just as easily test the temperature using your own hand or elbow. However, after finding myself with a tiny newborn with the softest and most delicate skin I became a worrier, and for the first few baths I always needed that second opinion. In fact I have loved having the Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer far more than I ever thought I would as it just provides that extra peace of mind, especially during those first few weeks when being a new mum feels overwhelming and it certainly made me ten times more likely to over think even the basics.
So what exactly is the Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer, essentially it is a postcard size piece of plastic card that has the Little Circus Mothercare design featured and a small thermometer strip at the bottom. Personally, I love the Little Circus Mothercare range, it tends to be based around bright yellows, reds and blues and features animals that you would typically associate with a circus. It is cute and vibrant. The thermometer strip is really easy to read and interpret, it has three boxes that indicate whether the water temperature of your baby's bath is either too cold (under 36 degrees), ideal (36 - 38 degrees) or too hot (over 38 degrees). I have never double checked the accuracy of the thermometer but I would say that from experience it seems to be pretty accurate and really what it indicates as an ideal temperature is the same sort of temperature that I would usually run for my baby's bath anyway.
I have now been using the Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer for quite a few months, and it has certainly come in handier than I would ever have initially thought. So far my husband has yet to run the baby a bath without giving the Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer a quick dip first because within seconds you have that extra conformation that the temperature is perfect - it always reminds me a little of Goldilocks - 'it's not too hot, or too cold it is just right'. And I'm sure my little one will be grateful (especially during the first few weeks) for not being washed in too cold a bath for fear of having the water too hot because newborn skin is so delicate.
If you are interested you can purchase the Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer for £3.99 from most Mothercare stores or the online store. Personally, I would highly recommend the Mothercare Little Circus bath thermometer it is a relatively inexpensive item that really does come in handy and if anything makes life that little easier during those difficult first few weeks where everything feels a tad overwhelming then I'm all for it.
Five out of five stars. Read the complete review |
