Boots Cough Syrup 3 Month Plus
by NUDUL
We bought this medicine this weekend as my six month old son is suffering from a bad cold and it is starting to move onto his chest. The Calpol and (when needed) baby Nurofen have helped to keep his temperature down but he has a lot of phlegm on his chest and none of that was helping to break it down. In fact the stickiness of them ... seemed to make it worse so off we went on a hunt for something a baby could have to help.
Most own brand medicines for coughs are not recommended for children under the age of one and the Tixylix and Calcough are quite expensive for what they are. Don't get me wrong - I would spend every penny I had to make him better if I knew that the expense would help, but I also know that most stores own brand medicine is just as good and half the price. So I looked around and found that Boots was the only store that had it suitable for babies 3+ months. At £2.85 for 100ml I decided to go and get some and am glad I did. The medicine is glycerol based and apple flavoured which was a surprise to me as most baby medicines are strawberry or orange. My son wasn't overly sure about the flavour at first, but after the first dose he took it fine - in fact the only one he doesn't like is the orange flavour. The dose for the medicine is 5ml for a baby 3+ months, three to four times a day. Above that age it is a 10ml dose three to four times a day and it is designed to relieve dry and tickly coughs. The medicine is colour free and sugar free which is good for babies and little ones as it won't affect their teeth.
The Boots website says that thee medicine is for babies and toddlers one year and over but the packaging clearly states that it is for children 3+ months. The medicine is only available from Boots as it is Boots own brand. You can buy it in store or on the website.
So far we have used this medicine twice a day for three days and it is working wonders. It is helping to break up the phlegm and he is able to sleep through that little better which is helping get rid of the cold. I would really recommend it for this type of cough on little ones as it is doing the world of good. Read the complete review |

Outlook Shade-a-Babe
by paulie1975
We bought a shade a babe for £29.99 from Amazon more to cover summer holidays abroad than much risk from the UK sun. As such over the 30 months we've owned it we've probably only really used it on 11 or 12 occasions with three foreign trips and some unfeasibly hot, sunny days last summer.
The idea of the shade a babe is that ... on sunny days it protects your little one from the UV rays of the sun, it is a darkened cover that you place over your pushchair which means the little one can see out and you can see in but everything is darkened both ways.
My initial thoughts on this were that it was too large, too bulky and as our little one got bigger it was less practical and it almost felt a little cruel using it. In the first 12-15 months it was fine as baby was happy to lay there, sleep and lay there, so the shade a babe felt like protection, however once our little one reached 18 months it started to feel less like protection and more like an unnecessary restraint.
The shade a babe folds up and can be placed underneath your pushchair, it actually takes some force to fit it under our pushchair, which is a single baby jogger, and it is fairly bulky and doesn't slim down too much, I don't like this and it does discourage me from using it. To place it over the chair involves strategically tying the loose ends around various parts of the chair until it has covered the vulnerable areas from head to foot.
As our chair has a nice overbearing cover with a small plastic see through area I have always felt our little one has decent protection from overhead sun, this shade a babe has proven useful in the all encompassing sunshine of Gran Canaria and Cancun, but i'm not sure we gained too much from using it in the UK as I think the chair does a good enough job of providing protection.
For our little one, travel with this cover can now be frustrating, at a time when seeing things and interacting is everything, this restricts movement and interaction completely, people can't see in and we have to lift the shade a babe to check all is ok. Our child does become awfully grumpy whenever we use this now, knowing there won't be the chance to grab at things, point at dogs or enjoy walks in the way they generally do, which is a shame as sunny days are the best times to do this.
I don't like that and although I think this is a worthy purchase for the baby years I think it has a limited working life. We'll keep it in case we have another child and hopefully over the next few years we'll have plenty of sunshine and chances to use this, but overall my thoughts are that its overpriced by about £7-£10 for what it is, a darkened piece of plastic with tie ends. It is unfeasibly bulky and difficult to fold under the push chair and after a certain age begins to feel like a punishment rather than a way of protecting your child.
It does its job, but if you have a decent pushchair it doesn't do much more in mild UK weather than your chair can. I appreciate my views are entirely personal and the idea that it protects children from UV rays is a really worthy one, my point is I don't think on balance the protection it provides, particularly in the UK climate is worth the stress it causes our little one. Calpol Sugar Free Infant Suspension Sachets
by MikeBorry
~*~*~ Calpol Sugar Free Infant Suspension Sachets ~*~*~
~ What is it? ~
Calpol is a medicine designed for babies and children over two months of age. It come in bottle form and also a handy sachet form which is what I will be reviewing.
The medicine is a light pink colour with a delicious ... strawberry taste.
It is brilliant for bringing down a temperature, for aches and pains, colds, sore throat, teething pain, earache and post immunisation fever.
For use in the home I usually opt for the bottle form of the medicine, however the sachets are great for when you are out and about or even on holiday.
The box comes with 12 5ml sachets and you can pour the medicine out of the sachet onto a spoon or if your children are anything like mine, they can slurp it out of the pack!!!
~ Dosage ~
Infants 3-6 months
2.5ml
Up to 4 times in 24 hours.
Infants 6-24 months
5ml
Up to 4 times in 24 hours.
Children 2-4 years
7.5ml
Up to 4 times in 24 hours.
Children 4-6 years
10ml
Up to 4 doses in 24 hours.
Calpol can also be used alongside Nurofen for Children for when they are feeling particularly ill, which I feel make the effects quicker and helps them get over the illness with little discomfort and pain.
~ Buying it. ~
Calpol Sachets can be bought in most places, chemists/pharmacies, supermarkets, local shops, even discount stores stock these.
They are quite recognisable on the shelf due to the purple packaging.
~ Using it ~
As I have already mentioned you can squeeze the sticky pink medicine out of the sachet onto the double sided spoon included in the pack, this is useful for younger babies when the dosage needed is less than the 5ml included in the pack, however my children, now all over the age of 1 year, all slurp it directly from the sachet ... The little pigs!
~ Effects ~
I have always been impressed with the results I have had when using Calpol. I remember having to take it as a child myself and when I had my first son I was advised to use Calpol after his first immunisations and have been using it ever since.
At the moment my 19 month old and 5yr old are unwell so over the last two days they have been having Calpol before bed to help them sleep, I am using the sachets at the moment as I ran out of the bottled Calpol a few weeks back. I do think they sachets are a bit messier and sticker than using the bottle but they are really convenient and easy to use. They also fit neatly into a first aid kit or baby changing bag, or even in your handbag!
I find that within 15 - 20 minutes of giving my children Calpol they will seem a lot better in themselves and also not look so ill which means that they obviously work for them.
I do remember that Calpol used to make my eldest son a bit wild when he was younger but I put that down to him going from being lethargic and ill to feeling more himself and feeling that he had more energy to run around! So I used to give it to him at least and hour and half before bedtime so he would have had time to wind back down!
All in all I do think Calpol is a brilliant medicine for children, it tastes delicious, is a pretty pink colour and best of all it actually works!
