Mothercare Finger Toothbrush
by k2705
As soon as Jayden's first teeth started to come through we started brushing them with a baby toothbrush, we wanted to get him use to brushing his teeth on a regular basis and the importance of it from an early age.
To start with he wasn't too bad at letting us do it, although he would spend more time trying to eat the ... toothpaste and wanted to hold the brush himself but we got there eventually.
However a little while ago he decided that he didn't like his toothbrush and there was no way we were going to use it on him, we tried various different methods to try and encourage him but he was not going to budge so I started looking for alternative toothbrushes for baby's.
I came across the Mothercare Finger Toothbrush, I decided to give this a try as I thought Jayden might let us clean his teeth with something on the end of our finger rather than trying to put a toothbrush into his mouth. I was hoping this would work as I was not getting anywhere with a regular brush and it would always end up in him getting upset and I didn't want him to get a thing about it and be nervous about having his teeth cleaned.
The Mothercare Finger Toothbrush came attached to a small rectangle card with clear plastic over the top of it to hold it in place. The packaging was mainly orange and white and had the name of the product on the front of the card and all of the product information on the back of the card.
There was nothing overly fancy about the packaging and the front of the card was mainly taken up with the clear plastic displaying the Finger Toothbrush inside, however it did tell you all the information that you needed to know.
The Finger Toothbrush comes in a small clear plastic oval case, again this is quite plain the only design on it is the Mothercare logo in orange, but the clear plastic does allow you to see the Finger Toothbrush inside so you know exactly what you are getting.
The case open out in half to allow you to remove the toothbrush and then simply clips back in place again, this helps you to keep the toothbrush clean and hygienic between brushing.
The Mothercare Finger Toothbrush is made from a clear rubbery plastic, it has bristles on one side and little bobbles on the other side, both are made from the same clear rubbery plastic that the brush itself is made from.
There is nothing fancy about the toothbrush it is quite plain, the rubber it is made from is quite thick with the section where the bristles are being a little thick and a little more solid, personally I am pleased about this as at the moment as soon as anything is put in Jayden's mouth he tries to bite it as hard as he can including fingers so the thick rubber means that his sharp little teeth cannot hurt or cause any damage.
Using the Mothercare Finger Toothbrush is very simple, you just push the brush onto the end of your finger and gently rub it over your baby's teeth and gums either with or without toothpaste.
The information is a bit conflicting as the back of the packaging says not to use toothpaste but the information on the Mothercare website says that you can use the brush with toothpaste, personally I do use toothpaste on Jayden which is designed for his age group and I only use a very small amount at a time.
The dual side of bristles and bobbles allows you to brush your baby's teeth and massage sore gums at the same time whilst at the same time getting your baby use to the feeling of having their teeth brushed.
This item is only available from Mothercare as it is one of their own brand products, the toothbrush cost just £2.99 which I personally thought was excellent value for money. I ordered mine online so I had postage on top of that but I didn't really mind as long as it worked and allowed me to brush Jayden's teeth. The Finger Toothbrush is of a good quality and is well made so definitely worth the money.
We have been using the Mothercare Finger Toothbrush for a while now and it has been a success. When I first tried to brush Jayden's teeth with it he was a little bit wary of it and had to fully examine it before it went anywhere near his mouth but once he had done this he was more than happy for me to clean his teeth with it.
I think the fact that it was on my finger rather than just me putting a toothbrush in his mouth made him feel more comfortable having it done, also I personally found that with the brush being on my finger it made it easier for me to feel what I was doing, as he only has 6 teeth I like to make sure I brush them thoroughly so by using my finger I can make sure I do this.
The toothbrush is a excellent price and in my opinion worth the money especially as it works and allows Jayden's teeth to be cleaned without a battle every night. The only problem I have now is to get Jayden to sit still while his teeth are being brushed rather than trying to help and organise things.
I would definitely recommend the Mothercare Finger Toothbrush to anyone looking to buy their baby's first toothbrush and I am even considering buying another one in case anything happens to the one we have. Read the complete review |

Mothercare Finger Toothbrush
by scooch12
My 10 month old daughter hates me cleaning her 8 little teeth. Obviously it's very important and I bought a normal Aquafresh baby toothbrush thinking it would help with the job, but she won't let me remotely near her mouth with that and just keeps it tightly shut. I spotted this finger toothbrush on Mothercare's website and whilst they ... had a buy one get one half price offer on and I was buying another item too, it only cost £1.49 (normal price £2.99).
When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting much at that price but it looked good quality and great value. It comes in it's own plastic case which I think is a big positive. The normal toothbrush we have didn't come with anything like that, just in normal toothbrush packaging and I think it's important to have the head covered - after all it's well known that baby items should be spotlessly clean, why is a toothbrush any different? It protects it and allows me to keep it safe. There is also a belt clip on the back of the case for travelling. The case isn't very sturdy, it clicks down in place ok but when unclipped the hinges come apart sometimes. It's useable though and better than nothing at all.
The toothbrush looks like a big thimble, it's around 7cm long and 2.5cm wide. It's designed to slide onto an adult finger to help clean children's teeth. It has two sides to it towards the tip - one side has small little plastic bristles and the other has small bumps on it that are there to help massage their gums. The size of the toothbrush is what really lets it down to me, it's so huge! The bristle part of the brush is at least twice the size of the regular baby toothbrush we have and therefore she won't let this near her mouth either. I don't blame her because it must look gigantic through her eyes!
The whole thing is made of silicone and is therefore very easy to clean. I should know because I usually have to clean it when it still has a smear of toothpaste still on it! I just rinse it in warm water and it takes no time.
I have small hands and I find that the finger toothbrush is quite snug on my index finger, just something to bear in mind. I would suggest that it's only designed to be used on the index finger as it would be very difficult to use on any of the others. I've never asked my husband to have a go using it but I think he'd struggle to fit in onto his index finger. The thimble part also comes right down to the knuckle on my finger which also makes it difficult to manoeuvre, it isn't flexible and I think it needs to be in order to clean teeth properly.
I will try to use this again once my baby is older but I certainly can't recommend the toothbrush for babies of her age range, she hates it and I've never managed to get it anywhere near her teeth despite trying countless times. I'm still having to resort to cleaning her teeth with my finger and a muslin with a smear of her baby toothpaste as it's the only way she'll let me. I think if they made the head far smaller, I'd have had a chance with it. I'm glad I gave it a go though as it was a good price and might be better used when she's a bit bigger. I rate it 2 stars overall just because I think the case and ease of cleaning earn those, plus the fact that my daughter might just be fussy and others may have a better experience.

Mothercare Baby Nail Scissors
by scooch12
My daughter's nails are so hard to maintain, I've got to wait until she's asleep before doing them! I bought a set of nail clippers from Mothercare and in the set I also received these scissors, I thought I could see which made the job easier.
The set cost around £3.50 although I've just checked their website and the items ... are now only available separately, £1.49 for the scissors. They are simply designed, they come with easy grip white plastic handles and have small stainless steel blades with rounded edges.
I found that the scissors were a bit bulky to use with her fingers when she was a smaller baby, up to around 6 months. I couldn't manoeuvre them enough to trim her nails properly and to a short enough length. Certainly when she was younger they seemed massive compared to her tiny fingers! Now at 10 months, they seem a much better size as her hands have grown a bit but I'm now used to using the clippers for the job as they've been easy to use right from the start. As she gets older though and has less daytime sleep, I feel they'll be handier as it's easy to catch her with the clippers when she's awake.
Even though I prefer to use nail clippers for her nails at the moment, I've still had great use from these. She has single use cartons of milk sometimes and these are a pain to get the tops from as there's no way of opening them other than ripping or cutting. These are perfect for the job as the blades are sharp enough to cut through - we have other scissors in the house but they end up being used for odd jobs in the garage and are not ones I want near my daughter's things. I find with these we all know that they're for use with her things only and that reassures me. They are also great for cutting loose threads on clothing and opening food pouches. Although not their intended use, they are very versatile!
I recommend these scissors as they're a great price, but more as an extra general pair to use. They're extremely handy to have. I rate them 4 stars even though I don't currently use them as nail trimmers. Read the complete review |
