Snuffle Babe Vapour Rub
by CrazyEgg We had a bit of a scare last year when Baby CrazyEgg got the snuffles. She had had a cold and I thought she was on the mend, but then noticed irregularities in her breathing. I was settling her down to sleep, reading her a story, and noticed when she drifted off that she would take three breaths, pause, grunt...three breaths, pause, ... grunt. The skin at the base of her throat seemed to be sucked in a lot before the grunt, and at that time I did not know what that was called. When I nudged her awake her pattern of breathing became more normal, but it was apparent that her cold was not better, in fact it was now interfering with her breathing. A call to the emergency services followed and a trip in an ambulance to hospital. Having gone almost a year with everything ticking along fairly well, this burst of drama was a real shock to the system. When the next cold came along we were better prepared: signs of respiratory distress to look for were subcostal and intercostal recession (depressions under and between the ribs when breathing), and tracheal tug (the skin sucking in at the base of the throat); our role was to keep airways open and secretions moist. To this end I purchased a number of products, one of which was the snuffle babe vapour rub. I first heard of this vapour rub in a review on dooyoo. When I went out to buy a selection of cold remedies for babies, I was actually looking for Vick's vapour rub. I remember this being used on me as a child, and remember the soothing heat it produced when rubbed on my chest and the fact that it really did help unblock my nose. However, when I looked at the pack it said it was for ages two and above so it was not suitable. There was a separate section in Boots for children's medicines and that was where I found snuffle babe vapour rub, standing out from all the other boxes and tubs because of its bright white box with picture of a smiley moon on the front. It is suitable from age 3 months. The tiny 24g tub of vapour rub contains a wonderfully aromatic product similar in appearance and texture to Vaseline. The active ingredients that make up this aroma are eucalyptus oil, menthol, and thyme oil. Together these ingredients relieve nasal congestion allowing baby to breath more easily and, as the happy moon picture implies, get a good, comfortable night's sleep too. Use is easy: you simply rub a small amount onto baby's chest, probably after a bath (the warm moist air will also help relieve their symptoms). The only hazard here is that Baby may think it is a bit peculiar and rub their hand in it to investigate, and the pack is very clear that the product should not rubbed in eyes, obviously, nor should it be eaten. I found that I had to be extra quick in putting Baby CrazyEgg's pyjamas on to avoid difficulties. The product's base is white soft paraffin which is rubbed easily onto baby's skin, but does make vests stick a little, so take care not to get the proct on the outside of clothing as you put it on to Baby. Alternatively the pack says that the vapour rub can be applied to a tissue or hanky in baby's clothing, but this to me seemed very hazardous for a baby as inquisitive as Baby C. Another suggestion is that is applied to a hanky and tied to the cot, but I prefer the notion of applying it directly to the chest so that the vapours can be regularly inhaled whichever way one turns. I have used this product now on four or five occasions and it does seem to aid a restful night's sleep and unblock airways as promised. It is the only rub I have found suitable for this age group. A little goes a long way, and the tub I have does not expires until 2015, so very likely this is the only tub of it I will ever buy. The expiration date is a positive I would say, as the saline nasal spray we bought has to be discarded after six weeks of opening. You may wonder why I feel it is the snuffle babe vapour rub that worked for us rather than the nasal spray. It is because I could not get close enough to Baby C to use the spray. Some of you will know why she is very suspicious of anything being poked up her own nose. Apart from her own finger of course. Side effects are possible with this vapour rub- reddening of the skin, or a rash where the product has been applied. However, this was not something that we experienced. I would recommend this product as easy to use and effective for the under twos. Read the complete review |

Snuffle Babe Vapour Rub
by bluebell190 My 9 month old has just recently had his first ever cold, and it was awful! He could not sleep at all, he was waking up every half an hour, he just couldn't settle properly and it was killing me after 3 nights of no sleep! I picked this snuffle baby vapour rub up from Asda, for £2.50. I wanted something to help him breath easier, as he ... was really struggling with a blocked nose in the night, and the more worked up he got the worse it was. This vapour rub comes in a tiny little pot, which is 24g. I am glad it comes in such a small pot, as I hate keeping things like this which have been used such as adult vicks, once a cold has gone, as I worry about germs being in it from your fingers! This pot is really small and cute, and it is excellent to keep in your handbag for whilst out and about it is so small, so very portable. It has a screw top white lid which young children would easily get off, so keep it out of their reach. The vapour rub inside is a cloudy white colour, and the pot is a clear glass, so you can see the product clearly and how much you have got left. The vapour rub inside smells exactly like vicks. It contains Eucalyptus oil and Menthol just like Vicks does. The actual rub is like a cloudy white cream, but it isn't thick at all. It is really smooth but very greasy, but this makes it rub onto skin so easily. It really sits on top of the skin, it takes ages to soak in, but that's the idea of the vapour rub, so that it can be inhaled. It doesn't feel sticky, but does leave your hands so greasy. I used this on my son as soon as I had got him off to sleep at around 7.30pm. I put him down in his cot to sleep, and I rubbed some of this product on his chest and part way up his throat, which is where the box says to apply this vapour rub. It just glides across his skin so easily, it is really nice to apply, and feels soft on your hands. It didn't wake him or stir him at all as it was so smooth and easy to smooth on his skin without disturbing him. I always check on him all night before I get in bed myself, and the vapour rub was still visible looking a bit greasy on his skin for a good few hours. I applied more when I went to bed at 10.30pm, and he only woke up once that night, around 4pm, which I think was because this vapour rub had worn off. He slept so much better, and you could hear his breathing was more clearer too, this vapour rub really helped him sleep much longer. The box says this vapour rub can also be used on a handkerchief or tissue tied to your babies cot, so they can breathe in the vapours if you are worried about them touching it on their skin and rubbing it into their eyes. The tissue must be placed where they can't reach it to touch it though. This vapour rub did not cause any redness or skin irritation on my son's sensitive skin, he has eczema too on his chest sometimes, and it didn't bring his eczema out either. I was really pleased with this vapour rub as the nights he had his cold and I used this, he slept so much better only waking up once or twice instead of every 30 minutes. It seemed to let him sleep much more calmer and more peaceful, and really helped him breath so much clearer, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again for my son the next time he has a cold, it is so cheap at £2.50, and for us is now an essential item to go and buy at the first signs of a cold! Snuffle Babe Vapour Rub
by StazKilly Snuffle Babe is a vapour rub aimed at children aged 3 months and over to help relieve little blocked noses. All parents who have ever had a baby with a blocked nose understands how hard and distressing a blocked nose can be for a little one. It can stop them sleeping as they can't breathe properly and as babies need to ... breathe through their nose when they eat, it can stop them eating properly which makes a very upset baby, so Snuffle Babe is a handy product to have in for when your little one gets snuffly. There are plenty of baby and children vapour rubs on the market, Snuffle Babe being one of the first and most popular ones. It contains three natural ingredients which aren't harmful to babies and children. These are Eucalyptus oil 2%, Menthol 1.5% and Thyme oil 0.5%. The reason Snuffle Babe is made for children is because adult vapour rubs include other natural oils that are too strong and sometimes harmful to children, especially babies. It comes in a small box, and includes a 24g pot of vapour rub. The pot is plastic with a screw top lid. All instructions and ingredients are listed on the side of the box and again on the label of the pot. When you remove the lid, you can smell the rub straight away, which is just a menthol smell, but not overpowering. If you've ever had an adult vapour rub such as Vicks, then comparing them, you can tell it isn't as strong as them, which is a good thing for little ones noses! Snuffle Babe is very easy to use, you simply rub a small amount onto your child's throat and chest. Remember to leave ned clothes loose around their chest so vapours can escape! The rub works by the body heat causing the oils to vaporise. If you don't want to apply to skin, your child is sensitive to the ingredients, or for any other reason, you can also add some rub to a handkerchief and tie onto your child's cot or bed out of their reach. So, does it work? For the past 6 weeks or so, my little boy who is is 7months old has had a snuffly nose on and off due to our silly weather. Snuffle Babe was one of the things I went straight out and bought as I'd used it for my daughter and it worked really well. I only use it at night time which I think a lot of people do with vapour rubs as it is quite strong smelling so you don't want baby smelling like menthol all day long. The logo to snuffle babe is a sleeping moon, so it is mainly aimed to use night. I rub a small amount onto my sons chest and throat as he seems fine with it and I think this way works a bit better than putting it on a handkerchief near the cot. Since using it, he doesn't wake up as early with a blocked nose. He was waking around midnight struggling to breathe before I bought it, now he goes to his usual 6am. He still wakes snuffly at 6am as I don't expect it to work for 10-12 hours, but it help to keep him unblocked in his first few hours of sleep and helps him to breathe and sleep a lot better at night whilst snuffly. So, in my opinion and experience, it does work with helping to unblock his little nose for a few hours at night, and if he does wake during the night blocked up, which is rare when ive applied it before bed, then it's fine to apply another small amount if you can't smell it anymore. You can get Snuffle Babe from most chemists, supermarkets and I know most corner shops near me sell it, but depends upon where you live! It usually costs between £2 -£3 depending where you buy. Lloyds pharmacy currently have it for £1.70, usually £2.99! So, it isn't too expensive to buy and is widely available and easy to get a hold of. Snuffle Babe isn't suitable for babies under 3 month so if your little one is younger, this isn't recommended, and you should see your doctor. Also, it isn't to be used if your child is allergic to any ingredients, or on broken skin, as you can machine, it would sting pretty bad. So if your little ones nose is blocked, definitely give this a try, it's affordable and it's very long lasting as you only use a tiny amount at a time and it doesn't need to be thrown within so many days of opening, you can keep until the expiry date, which on mine is in three years, so handy if you have more than one child and regular colds occur. A great product to have in your medical cupboard! Read the complete review |
