Advantages: Numbs the gum very quickly
Disadvantages: Tastes awful!
Liquid Anbesol is another product on the market to ease the pain in teething babies, my friend recommended this product as she has been using it on her daughter ever since she started teething.
You have to ask the chemist for it as it isnt stocked on the shelves, it is behind the counter and a small 6.5ml bottle cost me £2.99. The box is white and it has the word Anbesol on the front in big blue letters. It has a green box underneath this which contains white writing that states 'rapid relief from mouth ulcers, teething pains and denture irritation.
So this liquid is not only for teething in babies but also cures a bigger variety of mouth problems, therefore is a handy treatment to have in your medicine cabinet for all the family. I haven't yet tested if this does actually help to treat any of the other ailments yet.
The bottle is clear glass with a black screw top, there is no dropper on top of the bottle, just an open hole so you have to be very careful when applying this liquid. The directions to use it for babies teething are to apply Anbesol to a clean fingertip and apply to the babies' gums, it states that one application will be sufficient and that this can be used upto eight times a day but you shouldn't repeat the application for at least half an hour. The liquid is just like water so it is quite tricky to not spill any when applying it to your finger tip, you literally just have to cover the hole with your finger and tip the bottle upside down.
I tried this myself first before I put it onto my sons' gums, I have to be honest and tell you it tastes absolutely disgusting!! But I can then say that it does immediately numb your gums, so I can imagine in the case of a baby teething that it will instantly soothe their pain. I did rub some of this onto Rhys' gums and the face that he pulled was a picture, he then went onto scream for a while, in disgust at the fact I could put something which tasted so disgusting in his mouth!! But after a few minutes he calmed down and then seemed to realize that his gums had stopped hurting!!
I must admit that I haven't used it again yet as I felt like quite a mean mummy, especially after I had tasted how bad it really was!! However I will keep it and when the pain seems to be at its worst I will give him some more. I will also use it on myself if ever I get a mouth ulcer or toothache in the future.
Summary: A fast painkiller.
