Advantages: Very effective and easy to apply, can't be licked off like gels

Disadvantages: Slightly unpleasant antiseptic smell

Anbesol liquid was recommended to me by the nurse at my GP's surgery (I was actually there so my daughter could have her vaccinations, but happened to mention that she was waking up a lot in the night and I suspected this was down to teething pain).

Like most parents, I'd tried pretty much everything: teething rings, Bonjela, giving her a muslin (or my finger!) to chomp on - all of these things seemed to work very briefly but then we were back to square one again.

The nurse told me that Anbesol liquid works as a mild local anaesthetic, i.e. it actually numbs the gums for a time, as well as being antiseptic, and that it's also useful for adults with mouth ulcers or problems with their dentures.

I haven't tried using it myself (and I don't have dentures - yet...), so I can't comment on Anbesol's use in adults, but it certainly did the job for our teething treasure much more effectively than anything else we'd tried. It did actually stop her crying, usually long enough for her - and us - to get back to sleep, and if she did need a second application it was safe to use again after just a couple of hours. Basically this means that not only was this more effective than the gels we'd used previously, but it could be used more often as well.

Anbesol liquid is much easier to apply than gels - simply wet the end of your finger with it, and wipe over the painful area. It also, for us, solved the problem of our child licking the gel off before it had the chance to take effect.

The only downside of Anbesol liquid is that it smells a bit antiseptic - but then it IS antiseptic so I suppose that's only to be expected....

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone with teething babies - there are a few items I've discovered since becoming a mother which I view as sanity savers, and this is certainly one of them.

Summary: I wish this had been the first thing I'd tried, and not the last!
