Advantages: Has both antiseptic and anaesthetic qualities

Disadvantages: Difficult to target to the right area

Anbesol Liquid is something that we have tried as an all round product to help cope with a variety of teeth and mouth problems from sore gums due to teething, to ulcers and general toothache. We have used the Anbesol Liquid in these situations with only a certain amount of success with our child, but have had more success when using this ourselves.

The product can be bought in a teeny 6.5ml sized amount, or as a larger but still teeny 15ml sized product. Prices range from £2.40 ish for the smaller size up to £4 or so for the 15ml size. Whilst the amount of product you get does seem small, you do only need to use it sparingly, so a little can sometimes go a long way. You also need to try to only use it on the effected area as it gives a short lived numbing effect on almost anything in your mouth.

Anbesol Liquid comes in a simple to use small glass bottle from which you can use a few drops of the liquid on a clean finger to apply it to the effected area. You can use the product twice in the first instance and then re apply it up to 8 times within 24 hours, leaving at least 1/2 an hour between applications. This dose is suitable for adults and children alike. However with smaller teething babies its advised to apply just one dose in the first instance then carry on from there.

We have found that this was more than a bit hit and miss to apply when trying to get it on the effected area when our child was teething. At times we even resorted to using a clean cotton bud to apply the teething liquid, which was a little easier to do, but is certainly not the best way to soothe a teething and fractious baby. Having used this I don't feel that the liquid version of this is a good way to get the Anbesol to the right area and so calm and soothe a babys sore gums at all. We found it caused upset.

One good thing about this is that its sugar free. There is menthol and alcohol in the mixture too which does make this a bit stingy before the anaesthetic action kicks in fully. Within the Anbesol Liquid there are also two antiseptic ingredients, cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorocresol which are meant to kill off any nasty germs that may be lurking and promote healing. The painkilling or soothing ingredient is lidocaine hydrochloride, which gives a short lived anaesthetic effect when applied directly to a childs sore gums.

We found that our child didn't much like the taste of the liquid although we did still manage to get our child to take the liquid on occasion it wasn't something that was easy to administer even on a cotton bud. This did create a problem and so we decided to stop using the Anbesol Liquid as we found other products which our child was able to take without causing the same kind of upset that this did.

We did keep the rest of the Anbesol Liquid and have used it ourselves and found it to be an ok ish product for adult use. This product is not something that is easy to apply to an already unhappy teething baby and so I would not recommend it in this form for that purpose.

Due to the poor results we had with this I can only give it 1 star. I would say that the Anbesol baby gel product you can buy is far superior for use with a younger child instead, as its easier to place on the desired area and is alcohol free.

Summary: The baby gel is better
