Teething has probably been the longest and toughest phase of babyhood/toddlerhood that I have faced with my son. At 16 months, he now has a good set of teeth but it has definitely been a rough ride for both him and me! To help ease the pain for him (and therefore me!) I have used all sorts of teething remedies. If it exists, I've pretty much tried it! The one that I would say that I wished I had found a lot earlier than I did was this liquid anbesol.
Liquid anbesol contains 'antiseptic and anaesthetic for quick-acting and effective relief of pain from recurrent mouth ulcers, denture irritation and babies' teething'. It comes in a small glass bottle inside a cardboard box as pictured above. Through the glass bottle, the liquid is visible. It is a golden yellow colour. It contains Lidocaine Hydrochloride , Chlorocresol, Cetylpyridinium Chloride but no sugar. It costs £4.49 for a bottle of 15ml from Boots (it needs to be purchased over the counter).
To use, I apply using a clean finger to my son's gums where a tooth is cutting. For babies, one application is sufficient and it can not be repeated within half an hour. It can be applied up to eight times a day. It can be hard to apply as my son is very sensitive when teething and doesn't like me anywhere near his gums when they are sore. And, now he has lots of teeth, it can be hard to direct a finger to the necessary area of the gum to apply without getting bitten in the process! Once applied, my son is unsure for a few seconds but then it definitely appears to help - presumably by numbing the gum. it definitely reduces the pain and discomfort that he is in though as he is just happier in general after application. The effects do not last terribly long, but it is great for short term relief (up to the half an hour you are required between applications) and is particularly helpful before naps and bedtime.
Like I have said, I have used many different remedies for teething and I find this to be one of the best. I have found gels can slip off the finger and gums too easily so can prove difficult to direct to the necessary area. This liquid does not have that problem. It is quite expensive for the amount you get, in my opinion, and a bottlr doesn't last long. The bottle opens with a screw top too so you need to be careful not to knock it over or you can lose the whole contents. A drip top may prove more beneficial! I do not really mind paying the price for this though as it really does work and help my son. It is a small price to pay to give us less fretful nights and make him more comfortable. A definite recommendation from me.
Summary: good teething remedy
