Advantages: Instant pain relief, Easy to apply, So cheap
Disadvantages: None
My son doesn't get a tooth, he gets 4 at once and boy do we know about it! First he starts with the dribbles and the gnawing. Then comes the screaming! This goes on at all hours and it is totally impossible to comfort him. I have tried all sorts in order to stop his pain. I found teething rings OK for when the pain was just niggling. I also used calgel and bonjela but felt that applying them was somewhat of a token effort as the application did not seem to help much. I used teething granules which are fine for minor discomfort and the ever faithful Calpol. I was getting quite desperate at the beginning of last week so I logged on to Dooyoo to see what advice other members had. I looked at the ops on 'Anbesol' a product that I have never heard of and decided with so many people raving about it, I had to give it a try. Anbesol is available at the pharmacy and isn't kept with the other more traditional teething products. That explains why I missed it. I have asked for advice in the past from several different pharmacists and noone told me about this little gem. Anbesol comes in a small (6.5ml) glass bottle and costs just £2-19. It is an antiseptic and anaesthetic liquid which is applied straight to the gums. The liquid is clear yellow and alcoholic, it dos not contain any sugar which is reassuring. The local anaesthetic stops the pain and also the antiseptic helps to heal. Anbesol only offers temporary relief of pain but I have found that it is just enough to ensure Joe gets to sleep. Anbesol can also be used for the pain of mouth ulcers and denture irritation. Me and my husband had a try of it and it certainly does numb the area which it is applied to. To apply you simply use a clean fingertip and wet it with the liquid then apply to the sore area. You can repeat the application after half an hour and use the product up to eight times a day. It is really easy to apply as it does no
t slide around like teething gels so you know that you have hit the spot. Also because it is a liquid it is fast acting, absorbing straight into the gum. A leaflet clearly explains about the product and states the sometimes it can cause side-effects such as mouth ulcers. I have monitored Joe carefully and he has had no ill effects. This product has been the only thing that has offered my son any relief at all. I really do wish that I had known about it sooner as it would have saved a good few tears - from me and him! Thanks for reading
