Disadvantages: Don't always work, fiddly to give young baby half a sachet

I drove to the nearest 24 hour Asda in the middle of one particularly bad night of teething to buy these, as I had head wonderful things about them and was desperate after all my usual soothing tricks (dummy dipped in gripe water, calgel on gums, calgel on dummy and calpol) had failed miserably and my son was still hysterical.

I was surprised to find that they are very cheap (just a couple of pounds) to buy, when I had expected them to cost a lot more, although I don't know why I thought this. The main problem I had with them was that they did not seem to ease the pain at all.

However other issues we had were with administering the powder - very young babies can only have half a sachet, so you have to open it, try to measure out half of the contents (which is not easy when it is a very small amount you are dealing with) and then store the other half. More often than not the leftover half got knocked onto the floor so in the end I used to put it straight in the bin to save the mess - meaning the pack lasted half as long as it should have.

You pour the powder onto baby's tongue to administer it, which is not too challenging when his/her mouth is open if they are crying. Also, it kind of sticks to their tongue so I found my son cannot spit it back out the way he can with medicine.

Summary: For a couple of pounds they are worth a try just for a chance they might give baby some relief
