“ Brand: Boots / Health Aid: Cough & Cold „
Casey has been a nightmare from the day she was born for catching everything going especially coughs and colds. I took her to the doctors with a nasty dry cough and as usual my doctor was very helpful at avoiding giving me anything on prescription but suggested I brought this on my way out as there is a boots chemist attached to our surgery.
A 100ml bottle cost me £2.85 which in my own personal opinion is rather pricey for an own brand cough medicin as I have picked others up in the past for less than a £1.
It is apple flavored rather than the usual nasty aniseed taste you get with most cough medicins which was a big winner with my children as they didnt tell me this medicin was yacky like they have others in the past.
This is specifically designed for dry tickely coughs not chesty coughs so was perfect for Casey as this was what she had got. It is sugar free which is always a plus in my opinion and has no added colours either.
As the name suggests it is suitable from 3 months old and from then up until a year old you only need to give a 5ml spoon full then from one year to five years you give two 5ml spoons.
This medicin did work to help clear caseys cough and ease it at bed times especially but no better than any other I have tried so I didnt find anything fantastic about this so I would only use it for a child under one as most others dont start until a year old but after your child is a year old there are may cheaper cough medicins that work just as good.
I do not often buy cough syrup as I am not entirely sure it works too well but when my little boy had a cold and his cough was really getting to him while he was trying to get to sleep we purchased this boots cough syrup to see if it could help.
The medicine comes in a 100ml screw top bottle and you also receive a measuring spoon in the packet so it is all ready to go. Children three to eleven months old can have a 5ml spoon three to four times a day and children over the age of one year old can have two 5ml spoons three to four times a day as needed.
I always try a taste of my children's medicine before I give them it to know if it will be a struggle to get them to take it after they get a taste and although this is said to be apple flavour to be honest when I tried it there was no trace of apple but the medicine was really sweet which usually means my children will take it no problem.
It has a thick consistency meaning it pour out of the bottle easily and sits on the spoon without falling straight off. Of course you need to get little one to open their mouths to take the medicine and my son was unwilling until he licked the medicine and approved of the taste so he opened his mouth wide and was happy to take it. A soon as I gave my son this medicine he told me his throat felt a lot better but it was still a little sore and he agreed to try and go back to sleep. He then fell asleep without his constant coughing as he had done before we gave him the medicine and I was impressed.
When he began coughing through the day he asked if he could have some magic (that's what we call medicine in our house) so I took the bottle out and gave him the two 5ml spoonfuls he was allowed and again it made his throat instantly better but after around an hour he began coughing again and wanted more of the medicine but as the four hours had not passed he could not have any. When it came to take it again before bed it calmed him down enough for him to drift off to sleep and although he did cough through the night it was not as bad as it had been previously and he was able to sleep through.
I am still not keen on cough medicines as I really do not like giving the children medicine unless they really need it but this medicine did help calm him enough for him to drift off to sleep and sleep through most of the night. In the day time it seemed to have less of an effect on him and I am not sure if it was because he was talking away and actively up and playing and so the results wore off a lot quicker than at night when he was quiet and sleeping.
This medicine is said to help relieve tickly or dry coughs and I do think to some extent it helps but I'm not sure if it is a placebo effect and as my son thought he was getting medicine to help this calmed him enough to sleep as through the day it had a much lesser effect on him. I would recommend this syrup if you are looking to purchase a children's cough medicine and at £2.50 it is not bank breaking and does help relieve coughs even for small periods.
When my daughter had a cold when she was younger, I much preferred to use Venos for her as it had been used with me when I was a child and I still use it now in my adult life if I have a cold. However when my daughter came down with a cold and nowhere had Venos in stock (it seemed everyone had a cold!) I had to find an alternative.
My daughter's cough was one of those horrible tickly coughs which always seem worse once you settle down to bed. After looking through all the different medicines in Boots, I finally decided on the Boots own brand Cough Syrup for 3 months plus. The cough syrup is recommended for children up to 5 years old and the dosages are:
*Children aged 3 to 11 months: 5ml to be given 3 or 4 times a day
*Children aged 1 to 5 years: 10ml to be given 4 or 4 times a day
It is relatively cheap and costs £1.99 for 100ml. It comes in a box which is now different from the one shown on DooYoo - it is now light blue coloured box with a baby crawling on it. The medicine comes in a brown coloured medicine bottle and has a child safety lid. The medicine itself is colour free (a bit disappointing when you are trying to convince a then 3 year old that this a good thing to be swallowing!) and sugar free. It is clear and quite thick. It is flavoured with apples and doesn't taste too bad (I always try stuff before I give them to my daughter). It wasn't too bitter but it was never going to become the taste of her life!
My daughter did take the medicine fairly easily after a little bit of coaxing. She quite liked the little measuring spoon and I let her do it herself after I measured it out for her. You can give this medicine up to 3 times a day for 3 days andit is suggested that you seek medical advice if you do not see a change after 3 days.
I found that the night we used this medicine with my daughter that she didn't wake up in a coughing fit nor did she continuously cough as she fell asleep. By the second day of use, her cough was alot better, she barely coughed for the whole day and when she did, you could hear that it wasn't so tickly anymore. The third day rolled around and her cough had pretty much gone so I ceased use.
I was very impressed with this cough syrup. It worked just as well a bigger brands do and was fast and effective. The only thing I would say is that if your child has a cough with one of those colds where they are sicky with it then I would lay off of using this too much as I did find the thickness of it made my daughter sick (this was a different occassion).
I always keep a bottle of this spare in the cupboard and highly recommened it.
I bought this when my son was poorly recently. I didn't have much cash on me and was trying not to use my bank card for a while so was on a budget!
The pharacist recommended this cough syrup as my son had had a tickly cough for a few days, especially at bed time. It cost £1.99 from Boots so I though it was worth a go.
The bottle is made from glass and has a child proof lid. It is designed for children from 3 months - 5 years and is recommended for dry and tickly coughs.
The liquid is clear and looks very thick, almost gloopy. It is sugar free and colour free so there is nothing added to it. It does contain Glycerol.
It is an apple flavour although there isn't a strong smell. You really have to stick your nose in the bottle to smell anything. It smells quite sweet but it is very faint. The taste is ok, there is a faint hint of apple but again it is very faint.
The instructions are 3-11 months: 5 ml 3 or 4 times a day
1 year - 5 years : 10 ml 3 or 4 times a day.
I tried this with my son and he took it easily enough. There is a plastic measuring spoon inside the packaging so it is easy to get the right amount. He didn't blink at the taste so it can't have been too bad!
I used this medicine for 3 days which is the maximum amount of time that they recommend using it before you should seek medical advice. I found that by the start of the second day his cough had lessened considerably. Also, he hadn't woken up coughing in the night which he had been doing. He seemed to have a bit more energy on the second day although this may have been due to the good nights sleep rather than the medicine. By the end of the third day he was a lot better and the cough had practically gone.
I would definately recommend this cough medicine. It is a lot cheaper than most other medicines and it did the job just as well.
A soothing syrup which helps relieve the symptoms of dry tickly coughs.
