Advantages: instant relief, cheap, long lasting

Disadvantages: None!

When my daughter started teething i was recommended many products by my sisters and by friends who had sworn by them for their children and wanted to pass on the tips. Teething is a natural process, but you wouldn't think so from the pain it causes your little one. There is no cure to this pain short of sedating your little one until all of the teeth come through and this really isn't an option!

Soothing the pain, however, is a completely different kettle of fish. Which method do you choose? There are powders, gels, liquids and teething aids (eg teethers) and there is no easy place to start selecting. This was made easier for me however, as my daughter is allergic to milk and so the powders were immediately ruled out along with a couple of gels and liquids.

So where did i turn? The fantastic invention of calgel which is made by the same people as calpol. It usually comes in a tube of 10g for the fantastic price of £1.26 and the effects? Instant!

******The gel******

The gel is a soft brownish kind of colour and is contains two active ingredients - Lidocaine Hydrochloride and Cetylpyridinium Chloride. The first is an anaesthetic which relieves the pain, the latter being an antiseptic that kills bacteria (you often find this when the gums break and there is a small chance of infection).

******The taste******

It tastes really nice if i do say so myself (i usually lick the excess off of my finger, it's either that or let my daughter chomp my finger off lol) and it's been an instant hint with my daughter who actually cries when she sees me putting the lid back on.

******Application******

It says on it that you can apply it with a clean finger or a cotton bud. I prefer to use my finger as knowing my lo she would eat the cotton bud! I know a lot of people apply it to the dummy but i don't see how this can be as effective on the affected area. You can apply it every 20 minutes up to 6 times a day but personally i've found it usually soothes her for an hour or so before she starts to get a little grumpy again so you really don't need it more than 6 times a day.

******Price******

As mentioned above we buy this in our local asda for around £1.26 in a 10g tube and it does last us for a few weeks so it's definately worth it. In fact i'd say it's an absolute bargain.

******The verdict******

So does it work as effectively as others? Well i think so. My sister swore by another brand until she went out with me one day without her liquid teething stuff. She borrowed some calgel for her little girl and was instantly surprised how quickly it worked - so much so she went straight to sleep! My friends now also swear by calgel and nothing would make me change brands.

Summary: Relief for your little one in a tiny little tube. Definately worth the buy.
