Advantages: Great orange flavour, easy to apply, effective quickly

I bought this on special offer in Boots (50p off a tube that normally cost £1.59) while I was still pregnant, in preparation for the horrors of teething that everyone had warned me about.

When the symptoms started (night waking, drooling constantly, screaming, rosy cheeks etc.) at 10 weeks, when he was still suffering from colic, I was terrified of what was to come. However as soon as he was old enough (3 months) I whipped the Calgel out of my bathroom cupboard and never looked back!

It comes in a purple box and each tube contains 15g of product. You have to pierce the tube by using the top of the screw-off lid (turning it round like you would with a tube of tomato puree). The product is sqeuuzed out like toothpaste and is a cheerful orange colour. You are supposed to apply to gums every 20 minutes as required.

Before I used it (but after I had bought it) I read something saying Bonjela was better because it contained fewer additives, so I decided I would just use up the Calgel and then buy Bonjela in future. However it was amazing at settling him...of course for every tiny dot I got onto his gums, ten times that got swallowed but he certainly enjoyed the taste and that alone helped to calm him down when he was really distraught. It helped him settle back to sleep on many occasions.

That said, when I ran out I duly switched to Bonjela...and within 24 hours was back at Boots re-stocking my shelves with Calgel! He did not take to the Bonjela at all, whereas the Calgel was fabulous! I can only presume it was the orange flavour he enjoyed, but when all else failed during the dreaded teething, I could always rely on good old Calgel...

Summary: I have re-stocked up on this ready for the next bout of teething and I suggest you do too!
