Advantages: So easy to use - gives parents peace of mind in seconds.

Disadvantages: Can be difficult to get younger babies to sit still long enough to take temperature

I bought the Calpol Digital Ear Thermometer when I was pregnant with my first child. Calpol is a trusted name and a digital ear thermometer is essential for any parents so I wasn't too concerned that I hadn't carried out much research. Thankfully we didn't need to use the thermometer for a while but when we did we found it extremely easy to use. It is so handy to have the thermometer and disposable covers held together in a plastic carrycase. The thermometer is supplied with 20 which lasted a good while. Extra covers can then be purchased separately. There is also an instruction book cleverly hidden away in the back of the case which is worth a look to familiarise yourself with the workings of the thermometer and which temperatures to look out for. The button to press to take the temperature is located on the back of the thermometer so that when you are holding the thermometer it is very easy to hold in with your thumb. Reassuringly the thermometer beeps when the temperature is outwith the 'safe' limits - although you do have a slight sense of dread in the second it takes to remove the thermometer from the child's ear and look at the screen to see the temperature.
I always take the temperature from each ear just to check that they are the same or very similar to get a more accurate reading. We find that if baby has been lying on one side then that ear will give a higher temperature reading than the other one.
When he was younger our baby would not keep his head still to get his temperature taken but now that he is one year old he loves it! He sits still and gets a little grin on his face as the thermometer touches his ear!

Summary: An essential for the family medicine cabinet.
