Calpol.....
Calpol is a children's paracetamol based medicine. It is specially designed for children over the ages of 2 months. It comes mainly in a strawberry flavour and there is the option to get a sugar free bottle as apposed to the one packed with tons of sugar.
For children under a year old the does is a 5ml spoonful and for children who are over a year old they can have up to 2 of the 5ml spoonfuls. The Calpol comes with a small plastic spoon giving measuring instructions.
The cost of the Calpol is around £2 for a small bottle or just over £3 for the larger bottle. This is pretty good value compared with adult pain relief medicine but of course there are cheaper versions of this sort of medicine available. Boots do their own strawberry flavoured paracetamol based medicine this is cheaper by a little but I think it doesn't taste as nice as the Calpol does and it also leaves a funny after taste.
The Calpol itself does have a fair few E number in but I think this is not even a thought if your child is in pain and needs something to take that pain away. The first time I used Calpol was when Jack had his first set of immunisations and he was a little upset about having a needle stuck in his arm. Calpol seemed to settle him well and made him feel a lot better.
I do try not to give Calpol a lot as of course it should be a last resort. There are other types of Calpol available for different things such as Calpol night which I do believe has a mild sedative to help your child sleep better. There is also Calcough which is for when your child has a cough although I am not too convinced on how good cough medicines are on the whole. There is a new age limit however on a lot of the different Calpol medicines and a lot which used to be suitable for any child over the age of 1 has now changed that it cannot be used until after 2. Because of this I find it just a lot better to stick to the original Calpol.
Calpol not only tastes nice (I personally love it!) but it also relieves pain. Calpol is just like adult pain relief in the fact that it can only be taken once every four hours and should not be used for any more than three days without consulting a doctor. I do think that Calpol is a great product and I prefer it to any of the other cheaper alternatives. It works well and is an affordable price. But then I really wouldn't care if it cost a lot more as long as Jack was pain free and not gagging on the taste of taking the medicine!
A 5 star rating is surely the only rating that I can award Calpol and I am giving it a VERY HIGH RECOMMENDATION!!!
Summary: a great thing to have int he cupboard
