Calpol - Not always the miracle potion it is reported to be (Calpol Sugar Free Infant Suspension 2+ months)

Advantages: Effective at reducing temperatures

Disadvantages: Doesn't seem to ease teething pain

Calpol can be used for 2 months and upwards and it is liquid paracetamol used for relieving pain and bringing down high temperatures in babies and young children. It comes in a purple box and the bottle inside has a childproof screw-off lid so you have to push it down and turn simultaneously to open it.

I stocked up on this before my LO was born as it is renowed for being a miracle cure. However I have never found it to be so. It is easy to administer (with a syringe in the early days or with a spoon now) and the strawberry taste is certainly much appreciated by my son, however I have never found it to settle him in the way most other people say it settles their babies. It certainly did not help him sleep after his immunisations and does not seem to touch the sides when he is screaming with teething pain.

However it can always be relied upon to reduce a temperature and so despite it not working as well with my son as it is reputed to with other babies, I keep my medicine cabinet stocked up with it for this reason alone.

It is something you should always have in, as with an unwelll baby if you phone an emergency doctor or NHS Direct they almost always recommend giving some Calpol, so everyone should definately have a bottle in the cupboard in case of emergencies!

Summary: It is definately something every parent needs to have in the house
