It's teething time and everyone I ask, nurse, midwife included has recommend Calpol to soothe and take away the pain for my little girl.
So, off to the chemist I trotted, well actually off to the chemist I sent my husband one night when my little girl was screaming in my ear and chweing on her hands so fiercely I thought she would chew them off. He came back with Calpol Sugar Free Infant Suspension for two months plus.
Calpol is basically a liquid form of paracetamol and is intended to relieve pain and fever in many conditions including teething, headache, toothache, sore throat, earache, and so on. What's great is that it really is a heal all medicine in babies and will take care of most of the first problems that they will suffer from. Of course it is not a very strong medicine and the suspension means that it just temporarily takes the pain away, suspends it if you like until baby falls asleep or the pain subsides somewhat.
This variety is suitable for babies from two months onwards and you can use it up until they are 6 years old. I know I grew up taking Calpol and I think just about every other person I mention it to remembers Calpol being poured down their neck at various times.
The Calpol is a thick sticky liquid. It has quite a sweet strawberry taste I'm sure to make it appealing to babies. My little girl was not too sure about it at first but now she opens her mouth wide whenever she sees the spoon!
The Calpol comes with a plastic spoon to enable you to be able to give it to your child, not such an easy exercise as I'm sure plenty of you will know. The spoon has two parts to it, a 2.5ml measure spoon on one side and a 5ml measure spoon on the other to enable you to get the doses right. I find it easier to use the 2.5ml side as this is quite small and pour it into my baby's mouth and then try another mouthful. Each 5ml contains 120mg of paracetamol. On the side of the box the dosage limits are given. It does this by age and also tells you to not exceed the stated dose. Of course, I am not a doctor so if you have any questions or concerns I would always say see your doctor.
The bottle contains 100ml and you can purchase it over the counter from chemists and costs £2.89.
