Advantages: Tastes nice; Gets rid of aches and pains; Good at bringing temperatures down
Disadvantages: You have to be careful with the dose
My sister has had a bit of a cold for the last couple of days and she's been having Calpol because of her having a temperature. She's nearly 3 so we use this sugar free version that can be used from 2 months old, actually we've used the same Calpol since she WAS 2 months old because I know we've always had the same box!
It's a good all rounder because Calpol can be used for pain and also if your child has got a temperature, when my sister gets a cold she always gets a MAD temperature even if she's not all that ill and she said yesterday that her legs was aching. Calpol is the best for that because we also use Ibuprofen for her and that's pretty good if she's got an actual pain but doesn't do much for a temperature.
Because it's got paracetamol in it you have to be mega careful that you don't give them too much. My sister can have a 5ml spoon every 4 hours but when I'm with her I try to leave it 5 or 6 hours befween doses just to make sure it's all out of her system before I give her more. It's safe to give the doses it gets on the bottle but medicines scare me so I am always extra careful with my little sister.
It's easy to take, this one is strawberry flavour and even though it's sugar free it's still very sweet. I've taken it myself sometimes for little things and the taste is nice..... even though the only thing it's any good for for me is helping a mouth ulcer feel better! My sister likes the taste of it, she got a bottle of calpol from the doctor when she had chicken pox and that one tasted soooooo rank that my dad ended up going to Tesco in the middle of the night to get her this bottle because she was getting iller and iller but wouldn't take a spoon of the chemist brand of calpol.
It depends on how ill my sister is for how quick this works. I think it's usually very effective, it starts bringing a temperature down quickly after I've given her a spoon of medicine and even though she still looks sickly at least she must be feeling better because she's been playing today even though she's not properly over her cold.
We used this when she was teething and actually I didn't rate it then. I think it's because the pain from teething is constant and the Calpol just wasn't strong enough to kick through it. It would settle her down for a couple of hours but then the pain would start doing her head in again with loads of time to go before she could have another dose. We topped the Calpol up with Ibuprofen then and it worked but that's TOO much medicine over 1 day even though we stuck to safe doses.
Recommended..... effective when your child has got a cold or pain.
Summary: Good Stuff!
