Calpol Sugar Free Infant Suspension 2+ months
Advantages: Effective for a wide range of childhood/baby ailments, Easy to give, Sugar Free, Widely available
Disadvantages: Can be messy (but not the product's fault)
Calpol is perhaps the best well known and most reached for 'medicine' when you're a parent and have an unwell baby or child on your hands. It's suitable for all ages from 2 months upwards, is sugar free and contains Paracetomol as its active ingredient, being the parent of a 7 month old baby boy it's been something that I've had my fair share of experience with during the times when my young son has felt under the weather and grouchy.
My little lad is generally a happy, playful baby, he sleeps well, feeds well and is rarely unwell however now that he's started to teethe a little bit and has discovered the joys of putting things into his mouth he often gets the rosy cheeks and a temperature connected with teething. Calpol is something that I give him when he's particularly struggling with his gums and whilst I don't really advocate the use of 'drugs' on children and especially babies there are times where you've just got to do the right thing and try to relieve some of the discomfort for your child. Calpol is a Paracetomol suspension liquid which is purple in colour, tastes a little Strawberry sweet and has a syrupy, sticky consistency. It is sold as shown in dooyoo's accompanying picture and included with the 100ml bottle of liquid is a very handy measuring syringe which, in theory, makes it easier to measure out accurate doses to give to your child.
The bottle has a child-proof lid and the syringe fits snugly into the bottle opening, the syringe has clearly marked doses marked off in ml's and the box gives dosage instructions. In practice I find it easy to correctly get the correct amount of Calpol into the syringe and rather than 'shooting' the medicine into my son's mouth I find that he takes it easier if I gently ease the liquid out of the syringe slowly and steadily. There are times of course where my son will spit out the liquid medicine depending on how grumpy he is being but on the whole I would say that it's relatively easy to get him to take it and is a far better method than trying to get a spoon into his mouth the traditional way.
Calpol is said to be effective at giving relief from a number of childhood ailments including reducing a fever and raised temperature, cold and flu symptoms and teething and I do find that it does work very well. It takes around 20 minutes or so to become effective and as I'm mainly using it at the moment for gum discomfort due to my son starting to teethe I find that it offers him some much needed relief, especially when it comes to bedtime and my son wants to go to sleep. There are clearly explained dosage limits and frequency printed on the box and I would definitely recommend that these are followed exactly, the fact that a syringe is included is a positive point I think and definitely makes it a lot easier to administer especially to a wriggly, grumpy baby.
All in all I can definitely understand why Calpol is as highly regarded as it is, the overwhelmingly positive reviews on dooyoo go to show just how much it is favoured by members here and this review adds another 5 star rating for this excellent product that I wouldn't be without. Calpol is effective, does the job it was meant to do and is (somewhat) easy to give to a child and for me forms a staple product in the things I always have a supply of.
Expect to pay around £3.00 for a 100ml from a wide number of places including supermarkets and chemists, Calpol is definitely recommended by me. Thanks for reading my review.
Summary: Paracetamol suspension liquid for children. A must have product for any parent.
