A small amount applied to the sore area is all it takes. My son loves the taste, so is happy for me to give it to him, unlike others, which he has fought to get away when it is being applied! It works straight away, and instantly calms him down. I often see him smacking his lips together for quite some time afterwards too, so the taste must hang around for a while. It lasts quite a long time too. The tube says you can reapply after 20 minutes if necessary, but we have found it can last at least an hour before needing to reapply.
