Advantages: Not expensive, safe to use
Disadvantages: May not work for everyone
Teetha is a homeopathic remedy that can be used to calm and soothe babies who are teething.
~~ ABOUT TEETHA ~~
Teetha comes in boxes of 24 x 300g sachets.
Each sachet contains the 6c homeopathic potency of Chamomilla in the form of fine granules.
It also contains lactose, xylitol and starch. It's therefore not suitable if your baby has a lactose intolerance.
~~ ABOUT HOMEOPATHY ~~
Homeopathy is based on the principle of like cures like. In other words, an illness is treated with a medicine which could produce similar symptoms in a healthy person. The remedy is produced by putting the substance in a liquid (water or acohol) and repeatedly diluted, with shaking in between each dilution. The resulting product is so diluted that the toxicity is removed & often no trace of the original substance remains. Homeopathy is unsupported by clinical research & trials, and many therefore doubt it's efficacy, blaming any improvements on the placebo effect. However I have personally used homeopathy on myself & also on pets with amazing results, so surely the placebo effect can't be accredited for the success in using on animals?
~~ ABOUT CHAMOMILLA ~~
Chamomilla is German Chamomile and is a plant of the sunflower family Asteraceae.
It's used in herbal medicine as a sleep and calming aid, for irritable bowel syndrome and sore stomach.
In homeopathic medicine it's used chiefly for mental and emotional symptoms, particularly in children, as well as for symptoms of colic.
~~ TEETHING ~~
Teething can begin anytime around 2-3 months or later (some babies can even be born with teeth), and continue until the age of three.
Symptoms of teething may include your child drooling, chewing excessively on anything they can get their hands on, flushed cheeks, irritability, disrupted sleep and eating patterns. Nappy rash has always been associated with teething, but recently experts have said there's no evidence to back this up. However my health visitor said that in her experience babies do get nappy rash when teething.
You can help ease your baby's teething discomfort by giving him/her something to chew on, but make sure it's big enough so they can't swallow it. The cooler the better, so a soft washcloth soaked in cold water, or a piece of cucumber or melon that's been in the fridge (only for babies over about 7 mths), or the special teething toys that are filled with gel. Wipe the excess dribble from around their mouth so they don't get chapped skin. If it's particularly bad, Calpol or another infant painkilling medicine can help (always consult your doctor or health visitor if you need to use for more than a day or two).
~~ USING TEETHA ~~
Tear open the sachet and tip the granules into your baby's mouth. With homeopathic remedies it's best not to touch the remedy if at all possible. But if you can't get it into your baby's mouth directly from the sachet, or by tipping it onto a medicine spoon, dab some on your finger and put your finger into your baby's mouth.
Use every two hours for up to six doses.
It's perfectly safe to use, with no side effects.
As with all homeopathic remedies it's effectiveness will be reduced if the person taking it has recently eaten or drunk anything else, so try to give at least 20 minutes before or after.
~~ VERDICT ~~
I've used Teetha since my daughter was a small baby as she had colic and I was desperate to try anything! If she's cranky, irritable or overtired I've found it calms her down as soon as I put it into her mouth. As it's a very safe medicine & not expensive it's certainly worth a try especially if it works & helps ease your baby's discomfort and pain.
Nelson's Teetha can be found in the baby medicine section at Boots at £4.80 for 24 sachets. Boots do an identical product that's slightly cheaper.
You may also want to try Ashton & Parson's Teething Powders, a herbal product.
Summary: Worth a try!
