Nuby Icybite Keys
Advantages: Multi textured
Disadvantages: No noise, cannot be sterilised
When my daughter was born we received a boots gift voucher which we decided to put towards a range of things, including a few toys and teethers. One such teether that we thought looked the part, and looked like something a baby may wish to chew on during that teething stage where these Nuby IcyBite teething keys which we paid just over £4 for in Boots.
There are certain features of this product that make it stand out from some other teethers on the market. Firstly it claims to be BPA free, and since most mothers are conscious of the health of their baby, is always appealing. These keys are called icybites for a reason as the manufacturers claim that these teething keys will stay cooler for longer than water filled teethers, and anything that would give a teething baby relief from the comfort of sore gums or longer is always an attractive property of a teether.
On the packaging it states that these keys are suitable from 3 months plus and we started using them just before the 3 month mark, when we thought our daughter was showing signs of teething - dribbling like mad, everything going towards the mouth, and even rosy cheeks.
The other element to this teether are the multiple teething surfaces that it claims to have which will 'aid in the eruption of new teeth' according to the packaging.
There are three teething keys linked onto a round blue hoop which in itself can be used as a teether. IT is the end of the keys themselves that can be cooled in the fridge and ultimately provide relief for sore gums. The three keys are of various colours, and around the edge of each key is another surface for a little one to gnaw on.
Obviously when we first gave this to our daughter she couldn't hold them herself, but my health visitor had siad just to hold them in her mouth for her to ease any discomfort she may have. She now however has got a lot better at being able to manipulate these keys and the ring they are on, and bring them to her mouth herself. I find that she spends more time chewing on the sides of the keys with the textured surfaces than the actual end part of the key, although when it has come out of the fridge, she will chew on these more. The ring is also big enough for her to be able to get her little fingers around and pull towards her mouth.
There is one major downside to this product in my opinion and that is that it can't be sterilised. It states that this product is not suitable for microwave, steam of cold water sterilisation. The product can only be wiped clean, which I do not think is ideal when my daughter lets go of it and it falls on the ground, or you simply want to keep it clean and free from germs. Why you cannot even use cold water to sterilise is beyond me, but I find it disappointing.
The other downside is that these keys don't make any sound at all. Yes, I know it is a teether, but I think it would have been better if they had at least made some kind of noise to make it more interesting for baby to use both as a toy and teether.
All in all, my daughter seems to like these keys. She has got a lot better at manipulating the keys and ring to get them into her mouth. However, it is disappointing that this teether cannot be sterilised, and it makes no noise.
Summary: A good teether but some bad points
