“ Brand: Safety 1st / Health Aid: Thermometers „
When you have a new baby you will find that you need to take their temperature quite a lot. Babies can pick up a number of infections or just have an off day when teeth are coming through and even though a high temperature is not bad in every instance I know in the beginning I was checking my little girl quite a lot if she was grizzly for no reason or felt a bit hot to the touch. For anyone who has ever tried to take a baby's temperature you will know how hard it is. You cannot use a normal adult thermometer as sticking it in their mouth will really not work. I have used an ear thermometer in the past but even this has been a bit hit and miss. You have to place the reader in the ear for a number of seconds and hold it there to get a proper reading but with the squirming around and not staying still for any amount of time, especially if they are not feeling well, you never really know if you have left it there long enough and if you are getting a proper readout.
I was sent this baby thermometer from my Auntie in America and have never seen anything like it really in this country unfortunately as it is such a good and simple baby idea. A pacifier is the America name for a dummy and that's exactly what this product is, a baby dummy that takes their temperature. It looks and work just like a dummy as it goes into baby's mouth and they suck on it. Then, the nice thing about this dummy is that it actually works to take their temperature. I think this is such a great idea as most babies I know like their dummy and will not squirm and wiggle with it in their mouth so it is the perfect way for their temperature to be read and also it can be quite soothing if their are feeling a bit poorly to have their dummy in their mouth. The dummy definitely stays in long enough for an accurate reading to take place and then you can carry on using it like a dummy and not have to worry about taking it out like a thermometer.
There is a little digital readout screen panel on the front of the dummy which gives you the temperature. This works in about 60 seconds after being in the mouth so not long at all and if you don't manage to read it straight away the dummy will store the last measurement result so you can go back to it later if you wish.
I have no idea where to purchase one or even how much it was but I think it's a great innovative product.
The Safety 1st Pacifier Thermometer is designed for children from birth to 5 years of age, it has a digital display which will show your child's temperature after 90 seconds, alerting you with a beeping sound. It starts to work as soon as your little one starts to suck on the dummy and has an automatic shut off several minutes after the maximum temperature has been reached, it's orthodontic teat provides comfort to your little one while ensuring there is no interference with your child's dental development.
We bought our thermometer almost 4 years ago with the arrival of our first child, we were fortunate that he was never a very sickly child but on the odd occasion he seemed under the weather, after injections etc we would use the pacifier thermometer to take his temperature, or at least we'd try, the main problem was however that he never took to dummies so wasn't comfortable with the thermometer in his mouth, we'd always overcome the dummy problem by swaddling him in a blanket and holding the dummy in place that way but doing that with the thermometer was only likely to raise his temperature and we would not get an accurate reading. The same problem occurred with our 2nd child, although we did manage to get some use out of the thermometer with her, she was much more content for mummy to hold the thermometer in place for the 90 seconds until the reading was complete.
I always found the thermometer easy to read and accurate, being a panicky parent I'd always have a back up strip thermometer just to be sure the readings were correct, 90 seconds is just about long enough to keep a young child quiet for although older children will be much more content as the time ticks away. The thermometer comes with a protective cover which allows you to keep the teat clean, this is handy as the last thing you want to do is add any germs or bacteria to what your child may already be suffering with, being digital though you cannot completely submerge the thermometer in water and it is not suitable for sterilizers and steamers, the best way to ensure the teat is as clean as possible is to dip it in some boiled water before using it, of course you'll need to let the teat cool before using it, that way avoiding interference with the end reading and ensuring you cause no harm to your little ones mouth as a result of the heat.
If you've got a child that will take a dummy then this is a great investment, at around £8.99 it may seem quite pricey but when you consider that it not only reads your child's temperature but provides comfort, is safe for their teeth and can be used over many years with all subsequent children it makes the £8.99 seem far more reasonable. I haven't had as much use from it as I'd like considering my little ones failure to take to dummies (which I suppose should actually be seen as a good thing) but I still have it in my baby box and with baby 3 not far from arriving I'm happy to dig it out and use it again should I have any concerns that he/she is unwell. I'd certainly recommend it as a useful piece of equipment, after all it works well and does it's job, my children just happen to have been a little difficult that's all.
