Snuffle Babe Vapour Rub
Advantages: helps ease a baby's cold
Disadvantages: none in my opinion
When you have a little baby and they are poorly it really is a horrible feeling. When my son was little he picked up the sniffles a few times. Of course we did the usual things including sitting with him in a steamed up bathroom and elevating his cot mattress but we felt we needed something more to help him. It was then that someone recommended snuffle babe vapour rub to us.
Snuffle babe is an inhalation vapour ointment which is particularly aimed at children. The product comes in a small white box with a picture of a sleeping crescent moon and coloured alphabet blocks spelling out snuffle babe. The product costs around the two pounds mark and is available for purchase from all good pharmacies.
The actual product is housed in a small white pot with a twist top lid. There is 24g of product in the pot which is only a small amount but you really don't need much of it at all so it does last well. The snuffle babe ointment is a clear waxy substance similar to Vics vapour rub or Vaseline in texture. The overwhelming smell of the product is menthol however the product also contains eucalyptus oil and thyme oil.
For babies over three months of age you can rub some of the snuffle bade on to their upper chest and throat. If you use it in this way you should make sure that you leave your child's clothes slightly loose so that they can breathe in the vapours that are emitted. When I used to use this product on my son I used to leave his top button open on his sleep suit so that the clothing was just a little looser.
Another way of using snuffle babe if you don't want to apply it directly to your babies skin is to rub some on to a muslin square or a bb or such like. You can then tie this to the bars of your baby's cot. I have also used the product in this manner and found it to be quite effective and the vapours do seem to fill the room. One thing to obviously be aware of with this method is to make sure that whatever you rub the snuffle babe on to should be out of the reach of the baby when tied to the cot.
You should not use this product on babies under three months old and you should never apply the product to the babies face. If your child shows no sign of improvement after a few days it would be very recommended that you took them to see a doctor.
My experiences in using snuffle babe have been nothing but positive. My son's skin has never suffered any adverse effects to the product which is incredibly important as baby's skin can be so sensitive. I have found that when rubbing this product on to my son's skin it releases quite a nice menthol fragrance whilst also creating a warm soothing effect on his chest. I can imagine that it is very comforting on a child's tight chest when they are suffering from a cold.
Whilst this product doesn't cure a blocked nose of cold I feel it certainly helps ease it and make the child more comfortable. I therefore feel that it is a very worthwhile product to have in your medicine box at home if you have young children!
