Snuffle Babe Vapour Rub
Advantages: Mild even for small babies
My daughter had a really bad cold last week and was feeling really miserable, she would fall asleep and then wake up crying as she couldn't breathe through her nose. I have always used Nasosal drops to clear her nose and I find them really good however her nose does become blocked again shortly afterwards. I haven't bought Vicks because I can't stand the smell I find it quite potent, I am also unsure if it is suitable for use on a baby so I went looking in Boots for an alternative. It was there I saw Snuffle Babe, it was described as an 'inhalation vapour ointment' and it only cost £2.30 so I thought I would give it a go.
The ointment comes in a small tub with a screw on lid a tub contains 24g. You can see the ointment through the tub it is a white colour. The box says that the rub is suitable for infants over 3 months, if you want to use it on a younger child you are advised to seek medical advice first.
The ointment is described as ' a topical ointment to relive nasal congestion' the ingredients are listed as Eucalyptus oil 2%, Menthol 1.5%, Thyme oil 0.5% and white soft paraffin.
As well as being an age warning on the box you are also advised not to apply to broken skin or around the nostrils. You are also advised that the side effects could include a skin rash or reddening of the skin.
You can use Snuffle Babe in two ways either by rubbing a small amount on the upper chest and throat or by applying a small amount to a tissue and placing it in the clothing or tying to the cot.
I apply this directly to my daughters chest. The first time I used this I was suprised at the smell, it is very mild, the smell reminds me of Olbas Oil. The ointment itself has the consistency of Vaseline. You only need a really small amount as a little goes a long way. The box advises you to leave your childs clothing loose to allow the vapours to be emitted during the night.
After using this I noticed as soon as my daughter lay down to sleep her nose didn't sound as blocked. She also slept for a longer stretch during the night. She still woke up a few times due to her temperature but this helped her to sleep more comfortably. I would definately recommend this again, it works but the smell isn't too overpowering. It is also great value for money as a little goes a long way, you only need a tiny amount.
Summary: Help ease the symptoms of a cold
