Advantages: Easy to use
Disadvantages: Not as strong as oils
My girls were born in the autumn and were fortunate not to catch their first real colds until Christmas time. Luckily they were just 3 months as before this time you are very limited in the products available to help with the symptoms of a cold. As a new Mum I wasn't sure which products would work best and so often ended up at my local chemist asking for advice and buying a selection to try. On my visit to the chemist when my girls had their first cold I came back with this Snuffle Babe vapour rub. I am a great fan of my Vicks vapour rub when I've got a cold and so was hopeful that this baby version would help to clear my little one's blocked noses.
Packaging
The vapour rub comes in a small 24g plastic pot with a screw lid. It is easy to open a and being plastic there is no risk to you or your baby if you drop it. The plastic pot comes in a cardboard box which tells you all you need to know, this information isn't on the pot itself so you need to keep the box for future reference.
Who is it suitable for?
It can be used on babies over 3 months, mine were just over this age when we first started using it and we never had any allergic reactions. The active ingredients are Eucalyptus oil, Menthol and Thyme oil and it advises you not to use if you know your baby is allergic to any of these ingredients.
How do you use it?
I have always rubbed this on their chests as directed on the box at bedtime, I also rub some into their sleeping bags so that they breathe in the vapours overnight. I find that the vapours are quite strong initially and despite currently having a bad cold myself at the moment I can still smell this. However I don't find that the vapours fill the room like when I use karvol oil or similar and as the girls have got older I have opted for stronger products than this one.
Price and availability
I bought mine in my local Lloyds chemist although I can not remember how much I paid. It is currently (November 2012) available from Amazon for £3.49.
Would I recommend?
Yes, this product is great for babies from 3 months. It is easy to use and the vapours help your baby to breathe more easily meaning more sleep for all!
Summary: A great first vapour rub
